Who has a dyno?

Ahongus maped my car on Rollers around 90 power runs and 45 mins on the road double checking everything so best of both worlds

Hear good things bout bob too think Keaden got his hawk done by him and he's very happy????

Bob Rawle is definitely up there with the best and specialised in Subarus.
He got my EJ257 to return 326bhp/548Nm using Delta Dash on a very hot day with stock everything except 2.5" SS exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, uprated fuel pump and K&N drop in filter on RON95 pump petrol. Numbers aren't everything and is all about how the car actually drives and delivers the power that is key to a satisfying drive. Car is very alive as anyone who has driven her, or been out with me will know. Power from 2500rpm... really alive from about 2800rpm till 5500rpm and then tapers off (due to breathing restriction on stock turbo and longevity of the motor). Tommy555 also responded earlier about Bob. Again Tommy's car is very well mapped and alive all the way through the rev range.

Have very good experience with Martin Treacy too from years ago and Robbie at TPD isn't bad either... although they were not Subarus, but I am sure they can work their magic on our flat fours too. After driving Ciaran's car the other day I certainly can recommend Aonghus; he did a great job on mapping Ciaran's car and can't believe how much he transformed Ciaran's car from the previous map by another tuner.

mapping it must be one of the biggest bullshit topics out there as in everyone has a opinion and knows more than the next fella and this lad can map and this lad cant
so here is my i dont know much opinion but im entitled to express it as everyone else does
before i start i know sweet fook all but from what i have read talked to lads and have experienced heres my 2 cents

some great mappers out there (more than one )

some not so great mappers out there (mainly due to time spent on car (some are still very quick and good)or low standards at a guess or price being paid you also hear of the odd well that was just dangerous and shame on you map but generally that wouldnt be fair to tar them all with that )

some cars fit for mapping (really something overlooked bye people who are getting there car mapped)

some cars not fit for mapping (and the mapper gets the blame for the car not running right, debatable if he should have mapped in the first place and charged you for it but such is life )

some mods stupid (your car drives like a bag of sh*t now why did you do that to it you should have picked your mods better for what your car will be doing whilst you own it)

some mods great (that car does exactly what you set out to do now well done you enjoy it )

as for maps

a pre created map can be put on a car no probs as long as the turbo or the injectors havent been changed you can load a pre created map on a car for example stock car with panel filter and decat upgarde buy the map file on line or copy another same car/same spec with good map and load it on job done risky yes you think but over states side lads fookin around with there cars all day and night we just are slow to catch up ,you still need to know how to be able to check that all is o.k. and that is not as easy as it sounds as if you dont know what you are doing you will loose much more than the cost of a map (an engine) so a good map is worth every penny from a good mapper for someone who doesent know what they are doing so be warned ,this option is more for the person who just likes to do this part themselves for the fun or they like that end of it(just my opinion)

if you have changed your injectors or turbo you really need to know what you are doing or your car will absolutely sh*t its self
a mapper is really advised here and novices avoid and a custom map will be required

ecuteck has development behind it and hence why it can provide tech 1,2,&3(iirc) maps out of the box that can be loaded on the car

open source mapping no research behind it and the map file you get may not be as tested as the ecuteck equivelant version so may be more risk (irellevant really if you have a mapper who is doing the map as he will check everything anyway and more applies to you taking the risk on putting a pre creataed map on)if somebody knows what they are doing it doesent matter wich software they use as they all edit the same paramaters via the ecu at the end of the day so its more down to the skilloff the tuner rather than software

Research and preperation are vital and another overlooked option is once you are mapped how easily can you get your mapper again if you require support etc. as a relationship needs to be built so you can return for your next tweek or just to check all is o.k. etc.

figures are only relevant as in where it was on a set off rollers before it was mapped and what it made on the same rollers after it was mapped (or its all irellevant figures )and even after that it still is debatable about temps and someother stuff that i honestly loose interest in and reach for a rusty nail to stick in my face as I hate the small stuff of this sh*t its just not my bag

theres my best opion at it all all be it a unmechanically minded opinion that is what i have kind of gathered thus far
i may be completely wrong (i usually am) but id rather post my honest opinion as it may help push the whole mapping debate forward without the excess horse sh*t of someone who knows fook all pretending to know it all isnt it surely better to hear a person who knows fook all slant on it for once who claims to know fook all
novices are entitled to there opinion too and im posting as one of them for them

Thanks colm, great post, thats exactly why i post on here to get lads experienced opinions, its always good to go into these situations with as much knowledge as possible. The point about being close to your mapper is a great one. Aunghus messaged me back last night and he can take a call today so il have a chat with him and see how it can progress.

is it just me or Im missing something but if you have too much business
you usually expand or at least hire a secretary, not just stop answering calls
I mean I didn't spend so much time and effort chasing girl that some members
spent chasing tunners :D

What usually happens is you hire a lad. He does a half arsed job on some cars. Word gets around that your shite and your out of business

I usually get trough to him around six or seven in the evening. Seems to be a good time. He is definitely worth waiting for. Knows his stuff

Got through to him absolute gent, flat out and the fact I'm after a Saturday slot makes it harder but we've come to an arrangement, told him exactly what I'm after and hoping to achieve with the mods I have and he's happy he can sort me out.

Will do sheriff :)

And ciaran, primarily map for irish fuel, secondary is a better response from the turbo and map in the mods I have. A few extra ponies wouldn't go amiss either, il be happy with 300ish at the crank

Sounds good man attainable and relistic... what's the full spec on your car?..

2001 bug sti
107 kilometers on the clock
Reconditioned turbo at 88k
Clutch at 89k
Rcm induction kit
Rcm 340 fuel pump
Sports cats (apparently)

Have a 3 port boost solenoid but aungus said it's not really necessary on the standard turbo so may leave it off.

Well that will be the spec when it's on the dyno being mapped, at the moment it's standard apart from esthetic modifications.

There's a members car blog on it if you wanna have a look.

A lot of talk on mappers....
My first map was with Mr Forest... No need to explain.
6 years ago at 900euro.
Ecutek.

Top job.nice man.

Daily driver, many years later.... a hesitation came in flat 5th and about to go into 6th gear..
Drove me mad!

Rang joe power... Answered on second ring.
Following week I was down on rollers for several hours with him.

No hesitation and problem solved.

To me he is very good and I'm going back soon to sort my de cat map.

I don't chase figures as most on here know..
I just ring the cars neck on back roads.

Now a friend of a friend that i asked could to map my car, who is at it years... Says nobody in Ireland can map!!

Mentioned all the names and he said no!

So my long winded point is people talk, some get good results and some bring sh1te to the table to map and suffer.

I'm happy with mine and my engine purrs like a kitten still.

I'll go out on a limb here and say my car gets driven harder than most here.
Own her 6 years exactly today and still on standard engine, clutch, box, diffs you name it.

Spot on Graham. There's even mappers out there who have ran their mouth talking nonsense about the mappers who were the ones who initially showed them the ropes. Introduced them to different software, dyno usage, connections with suppliers etc. Very poor carry on and very unprofessional. Talk about biting the hand that fed you!

Find a good man and stick with him! I tried getting a workmate of mine to let Joe map a car for him but he wouldn't listen to me. Ended up going to a local chap he knew who was flashing generic maps. Turns out he was just plugging in tuning boxes, not even flashing generic maps! Car was smokey as **** but sure enough he had more power. Engine shat itself 2 months later.

I'm fairly sure Joe's legacy wagon was still rocking it's original engine that he mapped before it disappeared after he sold it.
