got a handy book there a while ago on classic limited edition models from the mccrae to the s201,very hand has rolling road specs and reviews and comparisons and articles from famous motoring magazines. One thing that struck me as strange was they regarded the v5/6 type r as better than the 22b and even the evo 5 as a better road car, know having never driven a 22b i cant compare, but i thought the 22b was a superior car can anyone explain why the 22b is nearly 3 times the price if thats the case or is it just the rarity of the model.thanks

I stand to be correct on all of this but as far as I know the 22B is based on a v4. differnet ecu in the 5 and 6's I think. I've never driven a 22B but have driven a v4 type r and its fun to put it midly. The reason there so expense is well well HAVE YOU SEEN ONE.. there the dogs. . there was only 400 made .. although I read somewhere there was just over that amount but Niall1 is the 22B expert on here he'll fill in the blanks

theres a few reasons why the 22b would be 3 times the price

wider body
2.2 engine so more torque and power
limited edition with one off interior and anti glare dash
its the only impreza to be as close to the wrc car version at its time, newage cars dont have wider track like the wrc cars

i'm sure theres a few more things but in my opinion a type r v5/6 would not be a better car as it doesnt have anything the 22b doesnt have so it cant be a better car, and imo an evo 5 is a great car just like the subaru but again is no better, for years the journalists of the world have being trying to see weather the scooby is better than the evo and visa versa but really theres not much diffference in the two, it comes down to which you like the best

I think that quote was from EVO as they didn't like the over firm suspension set up and the fact that if pushed too hard the car would try to spit you off into the nearest ditch! The conclusion of that article was that the grip was like a video game but without the option to reload when, not if, it all goes wrong. (Probably explaines why the UK press car was killed!) The main reason they preferred the V5 Type R was that statistically it made the same 0-60 figures with possibly the Type-R being a bit faster but the 22B was more about in gear acceleration as the torque spread was much better. Also the Type R was more compliant on bumpy B roads. The wider track and tyres made the 22B torque and bump stear in road tests at the time which gave the impression of being more skittish compared to it's more 'normal' stablemates.

RE values, like any one off run of cars you're paying for the exclusivity more than the mechanicals, which were cobbled together from the STi parts bin of both existing and yet to be released cars at the time.

Hope that answers the question?

Type UK Press car hard at work...

(Just a geek note Colins car's reg number was 446 and Nickys 447, registered Jan 99 hence the 'S' prefix as 50 grey import cars had already been registered filling the single vehicle registration exemption for 1998)

Would this be why no 199 was 99 reg as well? Original plate was T713 MRJ

Yes. I had the same issue with mine as first registration (in the UK) was January 1999 but date of manufacture was August 1998 and so the VRT office in Limerick said it should be registered as a 1998 car as it was originally a Jap import.

VRT offices know nothing about nothing as far as i can see-did you see the vrt qoute i got for a 22B online??? Not that im complaining.
