As much advice as possible - Impreza.

Forgive me in advance for all the Q's but I've really got to start pushing things along at this point as I'll definitely need a car for work. To be fecked with getting a bike at this point, it'll take too long and I've too much going on to concentrate on putting it on the main burner!

Anyone here using their Scooby as daily driver? What sort of mileage are you getting? Anyone have an idea how much it'll cost me a week on petrol traveling 380km (That's the total.)

I wont be happy in anything other than a scooby but if push comes to shove, I'll just have to settle for another year or two.

Make sure to post up what scooby you have and it's spec!

Also any advice on common faults on any model you know of would be a big help! Preferably concentrate on classics!

Put in to perspective, public transport will cost me the MINIMUM of €65 a week. I can't see a fill of a scooby going over that for 380km if I'm taking it easy would it?

Right, let's get this ball rolling and get the show on the road! Once I have all the numbers I can make up my figures and see it's feesable! :subaru:

Ive been through a 1.6 , 2.0 and 2.5 since 2005 , the only car that will come close to doing the mpg would be the 2.0 n/a , driving one of these normally a tank of fuel will do what your looking for and have some left , insurance is alot handier on the pocket at your age as well , No turbo car will be easy ran , low mpg ,high service costs and if anything breaks its expensive . im doing a grand total of 100km in my current car and defo costs €30 for that at least , the road tax is €600 on the 2.0 cars iirc ,
not an easy car to use as an everyday car for the miles you will be doing mate

I know it seems like a lot of expenditure but if you think about it other than costly insurance I don't have expenditures like rent, mortgage, bills etc. as I still live at home. I throw the parents money every week and if anything ever pops up, a little more. They never ask for it and say I don't need to, but it makes things easier on the household as my dad's been cut down to a 3 day week and I've 2 little sisters still in school.

So I could be looking at about €80 a week in petrol? Not worried about the tax. €618 a year isn't much!

Can you insure a wrx or sti ???

It's expensive but yes. If I'm gonna be bent over by the insurance companies, I may aswell enjoy myself!

380kms on a tank is not beyond the realms of possibility but it really depends how you drive it to and from work. I used to get 330kms out of my old B4 which was much thirstier than an impreza and that was basically driving 90% of that time with a very heavy right foot

Who tax's their car for 12 months straight anymore at all... its 3 months on, 2 months off :icon_lol:

I can honestly say if i was in your position mate, still living at home with no rent/mortgage, no bills and no kids to look after, I wouldn't even think twice about it and I'd have it on the driveway asap :subaru: :subaru:

Enjoy the life while you can before some aul one gets her claws into you and takes all your money  :smokin:

Easily get 380 out of €80

Bug Sti mostly dualcarraigeway . If you can get insurance.

:smokin:

Even if it cost 100 for the week.. would you rather sit on a bus for 65 a week or in your Scooby for 30 odd quid extra?

classic or newage ?
Newage WRX's are surprisingly cheap for me but if I got one I'd only end up trying to turn it into an STI, which is a bottomless pit from what I've gathered on here. Haven't tried newage sti's.

Took a lot of arm twisting but eventually I got fed up going in to Axa and ringing them so I just got the IIF involved and they enforced Axa to quote me on the classic's.

This post made me smile! This is the mindset I'm in. I have a savings fund for when I retire, small amount every month but I've started it young so I'll have a little bit when I'm older. Then I have a normal savings account in the credit union which is for falling back on should I ever need it.

I can't take it with me, so what's the point in saving all the extra I have? May aswell have fun with it, which I haven't done in a long time! At the end of the day it's only going to get cheaper and easier to run a scooby as the years roll on, so long as I stay at home. Then in years ahead should I need to or should I choose to move out, I should be in a better financial position so may well be able to keep going with the scooby! :)

@Carlo, still in 2 minds about newage. I know it'll be better on juice and more refined, but I want the rawness of the classic! I'll test drive the Newage's though, definitely not ruling them out at all as the bug has always been my favourite!

@Ken, nicely put, I didn't even think of it that way!

you may Discover that a good classic is hard come by now , 10 plus years old now at least , possible rebuild on the cards etc etc , 2005 wrx sl be a nice car to start with imo , plenty of room for mods as well .

Yeah that's the downfall. I'm open to options & examples thought!

i get anywhere from 350-400kms out of an 80 euro fill. thats mostly city driving. i have a bug sti completely standard. If i was you i would certainly invest in a scooby as a daily :subaru: our one has been our daily for nearly 2 years, even though it costs more than your average daily driver its worth it

how much do you want to spend on a car?

if i were you with the miles your going to be doing each week i would be looking for a uk spec classic, p1,rb5, mcrae edition, etc and limited edition so in a few years it will hold some value.

imo after 10 years of scooby ownership and modding, it isint worth it, you end up spending stupid money on stuff that either doesnt work, you dont need it or you you dont want it after a few months, so dont go for a newage car unless its an sti.

the newage wrx are to slow, power to weight is crap, i drove a bug wrx and it did nothing for me, the difference with my wrx is its 2.5 and comes with near 300 torque which feels great but its still not a drivers car with only 250 bhp and no pull over 4rpm which i dont like but with doing so many miles a week you might prefer less rattles in a newage car, mine doesnt have one rattle and its on coilovers but my old type r which was on standard suspension had three or four which got very annoying on a drive.

its hard to choose one as each has it good points and bad and you want the best of both worlds.

id buy a bike!! and a limited car for the weekends

I'm averaging about 450km to a tank with mixed driving. I've a bugeye sti
Nice! I think there's still one or two for sale at the minute!

@Duffman - i think ill run whatever i get as a daily til the new year at least. If its too expensive ill get a bike then!

i tested this,i drive my 2005 wrx sl 5 days a week to work, kildare to dublin i took my wifes 2009 1600cc fiesta to work for 5 days and the wrx used no more fuel than the fiesta, driving the car right and watching the revs its great on fuel,i used to do the same drive in a wrx sti type r and the only thing it wouldnt pass was a petrol station :icon_eyes:the blob is a great car comfort and enuf go when you want, small bhp 225 but i wanted a wrx that i could run daily and the irish wrx blob is 100%......

Irish car's will give you trouble free motoring no matter what model
as long as they are a good straight low mileage unmolested example
they are down on power
but if are to be a every day car
they can not be beaten for cost
if you want a high powered car then go jap
but be ready for extra cost
more power = more cost
personally i have never fixed my car except for knock link and top rad hose
she will probablly blow up tomorrow now that i have typed this but sure isn't that life
i would love more power but at the same time would hate more problems
damned if I do damned if I dont
as said earlier
go looking at cars
its the best way
