Car Insurance

Anybody who has insurance with a company is entitled to be insured regardless of what they buy. It's called insurer of last resort. All you do is get refused elsewhere and your insurance company must quote you on what you have. If they give you a bananas quote, you can refer it to the ombudsman.

Oisin (& anyone else who knows),

Situation like this came up last week for me. I rang my insurers (Hibernian) and asked for a quote on a WRX, (insured on the 1.6 at the moment with them). They quoted me alright, but would only offer 3rd party, F&T. Are they fulfilling their obligations by doing this?

I mentioned the 'insurers of last resort' to them and they said "Yes we are quoting you......but only 3rd P, F&T". I pointed out that this isn't really cover, especially seeing as I have fully comp at the moment but they weren't budging. Am I being f**ked around here or can they do this to me????
Thanks

On a (sort of) separate point, does anyone here have a WRX insured with Hibernian? According to them, they are no longer offering fully comp "on that type of car". They said this applies to existing policies too, and people will not be offered fully comp at their next renewal!!! They said this is new practice for the last couple of months. I told them I knew of people who had WRX's insured with them fully comp and this is why I had switched to them last year with an eye towards buying one. They said that's not true, and that they wouldn't be offering it any more!!

Insurance Companies Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

I was with Hibernian on my 2.0 GL - I asked them to cover me on the WRX I was buying and they told me that they no longer insured Turbo Imprezas (this was November 2005). I went to AXA...

I had renewed in August and I asked them to switch the policy to the WRX (still fully comp) in November - they wouldn't. I was speaking to someone in their head office in Galway. I was sat in the WRX test-driving it and arranging alternative cover with AXA - who were great I might add...

Cheers Paulo,
Given my previous experience with AXA I dunno if that would be too promising a route for me. Another 8 months before I hit the big 3 0!!

Speaking of AXA ...they refused to quote me last week when I was trying to find a better quote than FBD's renewal price.
No big news for a Subaru driver to be refused a quote says you ... EXCEPT I'm driving a 1.6!!!! I told yer one on the phone that there was a mistake, only 1.6, non-turbo etc, gave her my current quote from FBD (690). She rang me back in the afternoon to say that they definitely didn't quote on "that kind of car". Apparently it's category 7 and I would have to be over 30 to get a quote!!

I'm 29 full NCB britton insurance quoted me €900 fully comp. on a 2002 sti with €200 excess http://www.brittoninsurance.com/

thedoc - I owe you a pint if all this works out for me. Just got a quote from Britton for 800 less than any previous quote I've got. Their fully comp price is actually less than Hibernian's 3rd P, F & T!!

Now all I have to do is sell a car and buy a car............

John,

I am with Hibernian through my broker and have been for about 7 years.

My renewal when i changed over from a 106 Gti to the impreza actually came down.

The Pug had been TPFT and when i asked how much extra for full comp on the impreza
the broker came back to me and said no extra charge (if you can work that one out).

Saying that when i was 20 going out on my own policy, Hibernian said they would'nt touch me until i
was over 23. A few days later and the treath of loosing all our business, that changed.

If you ask all insurance companies make up the rules as they go along.Thats worrying if they they won't
cover full comp come renewal time.

Eamonn

I actually mentioned you to Hibernian (without naming names) - the only explanation they could give was that your car didn't have WRX in its name :wall:

Like you say though, I reckon it would be more to do with the amount of business ye give them!!

Well that helps too !!

I was told by the area manager when I got my first turbo( MY00) that only cos my dad has so much buisness with them that they wouldn't have insured me otherwise, Plus my renwal is up the same time as dad's so I get him sort out the figure before he writes the cheque for his own insurance

He also told me that there was more "loading" on a new shape that the classic !!
( was one of his excuses to keep my insurance high when I bought the bugeye)
