Coilovers

Hi folks, a discussion thread if you will.

I'm currently looking into getting coilovers as a replacement for the original bilsteins that are in my Legacy.
I am aware that coilovers may be too rough for a car that will be primarily used as a daily (which it is) with some fast road use thrown in from time to time. But I am not interested in any lowering spring solutions due to being unabled to get replacement bilstein shocks that would be suitable. Although new top mounts from pedders might work? I don't know.

I've been saving and seriously considering BR series BC Racing coilovers with softer springs (5,5kg/5kg or softer), but have recently stumbled across the coilover producer Nitron, specifically the Nitron R1 - R3 line.
Now, don't get me wrong, they are seriously expensive. And I mean seriously expensive. They are almost 2.5 times more expensive than the BC's I'm considering - but does this mean they are doubly better?
But... is anyone running them, or know of anyone running them in either a Legacy or an Impreza? If they really are that much better than the BC's, I do think I'd be better off saving for those instead of the BC's.

If anyone can weigh in I'd appreciate it.

I think ultimately for a road car you wont see a huge improvement. Nitron are more track focused so will have more setup, better dampening, etc, etc than BC. But you dont need that for a road car really and might not see the benefit from paying more for them.

Hands down they will be better, but I dont think they will be better enough functionally to justify the cost. Other than the bling factor of having, which sways me a lot of them time to pay more for parts 🤣

Im running BCs with softer springs in the WRX and I daily it. I find them fine. Yes they are a small bit harsher than a standard strut, but a friend of mine had H&R lowering springs on standard struts and that was way worse on the road.

I have the BC BR coilovers in my bug. They're comfortable and handle the road well. Now they're 6 to 4 split from factory but they can be adjusted and have adjustable damping too.

At times. I feel theyre better than what was in it when I bought the car. KYB Ultra front and back with STI springs but the springs were very tired.

I always imagined coilovers to be for track use with the cheaper end of things being more suitable for road. I may be wrong, but the way I look at it is the more money, the more track focused.

Maybe even look at replacement struts and springs. May be better units too at the price range of the BR series.

From trying pretty much them all bc are good only if the damper length is set properly which most of the time it’s not as it involves taking the spring off each damper ,

the tein would be the best option for you and retaining the factory top mounts ,
Jp car has a really smooth ride compared to anything else I’ve driven

No point buying the Nitrons in my opinion

I would buy all new genuine Subaru mounting hardware when doing this as possible it’s never been apart

So realistically, getting a set of BC's and getting someone like Kevin at division88 to fit them would be the best option? I'll look into the tein stuff as well, thanks folks.

The tein will work directly with your factory top mounts , the bc will need spacers made up to center correctly

Yeah, like I said, I have Tein, factory rubber top mounts. Takes a lot of the impact.
32 way adjustable damping. I find them very good. I was boloxing for a but trying to find the ideal road settings just for comfort. They were set kinda track which made it stiff enough, have em sorted now and tis A1
No experience with BC but they are highly rated. Few lads here would have tried a lot of different brands over the years.

Rubber top mounts make a huge difference regardless of the coilover too. I have pillowball on mine which are fine, brother has rubber top mounts in his and they are very close to factory feeling

There is tein in my classic if you wanna take it for a spin during the week. They were set up all wrong when I bought it but I’ve adjusted them a bit, we can adjust them and you can see how different you can make them feel. Had BC in my last WRX and liked them too but I was younger and probably didn’t value comfort as much as I do now
