cooling

Middle Lane Hogs
alright lads i fitted a brand new standard rad to my car i filled it with water and coolant and i let it warm up to working temp i took it for a easy spin when i got back i noticed the bottom hose was still cold my question is would the thermostat be stuck??? i left the car tick over for 20 mins and the gauge did not move above normal temp (half way) and the top of the rad is hot! what ye think??

Did the fan come on?

I find best to leave it tick over till the rad fan kicks in, by then the bottom rad hose should be hot, if not then the thermostat is stuck. Normally if the thermostat is stuck then the car will over heat

ya got it sorted was just at it their the fans came on so she grand . another thing i noticed is their is a small bit of steam coming around by the thermostat housing when you rev it a small bit and i checked all round but couldnt find any leak even when the car is hot even the fumes from the exhaust smell bad not like normal??? any advice welcome what to check headgasket, pump etc i am getting a bit fed up wit it want it sorted

And was the bottom rad hose hot when the fan kicked in?

If the pump was leaking then it would be flowing out onto the ground and exhaust manifold. If the headgasket was gone then the car would overheat like crazy when driving it.

I'd say the steam you seeing and the smell is just spilt coolant hitting the exhaust manifold and burning off. Go for a drive and check it again tomorrow. Keep an eye on the temp gauge
