@ paul V4: your car should lash the starlet out of it!
Get her checked out, there is something wrong there!

Having driven modified Impreza turbos for 7 years I was interested to see what a fast fwd car was like. The pictures of the then forthcoming wrx (now present eyesore) only served to reassure me that I was making the right decision so I went out and bought one of the new Audi TT's last year. Its the 2.0 TFSI model and is fwd although I read recently there will be a 4wd version of the regular 2.0 tfsi next year (not the fire breathing TT-S).

I had her remapped this year in Logic Automotive in Rathcool using Upsolute software. I had it mapped for Maxol E5 and thats all . No other mods not even an air filter. She puts out around 250 bhp now and 360 nm at a lowly 1,800 rpm right across to 5,100 rpms. Being a six speed and very light the ptw ratio must be very good ( it weighs only 1,260 kgs).

Anyway, off the line you get wheelspin in the first 3 gears in the dry but no torque steer so its manageable but still a bit of a pain after having not known what wheelspin was for so long. Once up and going she is hard to pass and can and has stayed with 300+ bhp Imprezas no problem even edging away once into the licence shredding zone. The in-gear acceleration is much better than either of my old Scoobies and they were both quick cars but they couldn't compete with the new generation of high pressure direction injection petrol engines which allows them to run smaller turbos than normal giving instant spool up.

A friend has a very well kept 99 Type R Integra. In the wet I am always impressed with the way its front diff can lay down the power with seemingly no wheelspin. I know this will sound strange but its like a 4wd fwd if that makes any sense. The one thing I've learned with quick fwd cars is that they are just as quick as more powerful 4wd cars once on the boil but apart form ones equipped with front diffs they are rarely as much fun unless the road is dry and the surface smooth. On those kinds of roads they will give just as big an adrenaline hit as a Scoobie (without the soundtrack of course :?).

I really think the Impreza will be a dying breed unless it cleans up its act, literally, by adopting the new technologies which allow modern turbo charged engines to put out around 270 bhp but only 189 co2s ie 600 euro road tax (Audi TT-S S Tronic). If the Germans can do it so too can the Japs. If Subaru want to survive in a world obsessed with Environmentalism (which is fast replacing Religion as the new Fundamentalism) then they have got to invest in this technology now before they become an entry in motoring history books.

I can count on one hand the cars that have passed me (in the forester) at mondello, timeattack and race cars, no exceptions!
While in the skyline and having the craic, I have been passed by hondas (not starlets the I recall) in the past they have independant suspension so handle very well,
Starlets on the other hand have a solid rear axel, So dont handle very well at all, the slightest dimple in the road mid corner and she's gone,

Toyota have a big influence in Subaru now so I'm sure they'll clean up a bit, the regeneratived braking system from the GT supra would officially make her a hybrid!

My worst one was at mondello!
I was driving my skyline and i spotted a starlet gi (no turbo vent) closing fast! Drifting isn't the fastest way to go around the track!!
So I desided i wasn't going to be overtaken by a starlet non turbo especailly!!! So I started driving properly, racing lines and all that! But he was still closing  I came out onto the main stright and he was right behind me, then he just went out past me like I was driving a micra!
I spotted the car latter in the paddock! It had a decent sized front mount so twas definately a turbo! but some go out of her!

I did say "that I can recall"
