E5 Maxol.

Another spanner in to the works.

We have all been caught up in Maxol's marketing and hype but interesting facts I found this week to put the myth to bed.

If you buy legit, documented, fuel in this country it's roughly a 5% bio-ethanol mix.

It's all here for everybody to reference;
http://nora.ie/biofuels-obligation-scheme.141.html

The key word there is "obligation".

Interesting: The obligation was increased from the 1st January, 2013 from 4.166% Ethanol mix to 6.383% via the BOIS scheme(Biofuel Obligation Scheme )

The BOS Scheme places an obligation on suppliers of mineral oil to ensure that 6.383% (by volume) of the motor fuels (generally Gasoline and Motor Diesel) they place on the market in Ireland is produced from renewable sources, e.g. Ethanol and Biodiesel. The obligation was increased from the 1st January, 2013. It was previously 4.166%

The Applegreen station in Ballyfermot specifically says "contains 5% bioethenol" on a sticker on the fuel pump. Filled with this last time. IMO Maxol made a fortune on the E5 marketing scam for the last few years with all the boy racers filling their tanks only there thinking it was better or would damage their engine to fill with anything else.
Just out of interest after someone above said they get 350 miles out of a tank what mileage do others here with newage STis get from a tank? I only get a maximum of about 250 miles for an €80 fill. That's bad isn't it?

all fuel in ireland is e5 these days, it has to be due to the government legislation. How that changes the octane rating is a different story. i have been filling up wherever last few weeks and car runs no differently to when i was using the "Maxol e5" any mappers i talked to said the most the maxol stuff could have been at its best was 97 no chance of it ever being 99 with only 5% ethanol, I get about 450-500 kms from a full 60L tank depending on type of driving

450-500 kms. That's 280-310 miles. That's better alright. My brother is driving a POS citreon but he is getting about 700 miles from a full tank out of it!!!

Don't mind that. I used to get 700 miles from my 1996 Mazda 626 if I drive like a granny.

I worked out my MPG properly the other day for the first time since owning the car. 27 smiles per gallon. :D

Can I just say that Applegreen are actually Top stations,
geogan,
you need to get away from the euro element of a fill, it's litres that fill your tank, this time last year you could fill a 60 litre tank for about €84 where as today the same litres will cost you about €95. There is too much fluctuation in price to be gauging your distance in euros ye need to go down the MPG route or this new fangled litres per km stuff

Oh I was just giving an example of how much in general it is to refill it when I said €80...
I actually record total distance between fills and then how many litres I put in at a fill to refill it and then I get the actual MPG every time. I do a lot of city start/stop driving so the AVERAGE is low - last few fills worked out at 23MPG, 22MPG, 24MPG, 23MPG, 25MPG, 16MPG, 22MPG, 21MPG, 22MPG, 21MPG, 20MPG, 21MPG, 20MPG, 19MPG... but I have the Dashcommand app for iPhone (not a cheap app at €40!) running continuously while driving which connects to BT1 OBD module to engine and gives instantaneous mpg and average over 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 3 hours. On motorway at normal speeds it'll get maybe 37mpg. The reason the average is so low is because driving in and out of town every day the instant mpg is very low because you're not moving half the time. If I was to use the car only for the motorway runs I would have much higher total mpg. And the brothers 700 miles is ONLY on motorway runs.

Geogan nice bit of info there...That dashcommand app has me intrested how do you connect it to your car will it run off a car charger (to give readouts)...?

Dashcommand runs on your iPhone - you connect your iPhone to the car charger.

You need to buy an OBD interface which plugs into the OBD II port underneath your steering wheel. I have a wireless bluetooth model called BT1 from Gopoint here http://gopointtech.com/products/. This hardware is specifically supported by the Dashcommand app to read the engine parameters in realtime while engine is on.

Don't understand what you mean by give readouts but the app has a few different views with various dials and meters to show you whats happening. Also a specific fuel usage page to monitor fuel usage in realtime.

The fuel flow rate in litres/hour is always interesting - amazing how it varies so much in normal driving and accelerating. Usually average 4 l/h and can go from less than 1 l/h up to over 120 l/h at boost!... explains why your tank empties SO fast during a trackday.

Cool app Geogan,
Don't have anything as high tech as that, I use an app called road trip for the iPhone you input all the details then it gives you MPG distance to empty cost per mile etc etc it's a lot cheaper than the app you have without the real time element

Think it cost about €5
