E5 question...

I know some auto gearboxs are adaptive! they learn your driving style!
As Dagnut said, the standard ecu will adjust timing for safety!

have my 2c of worth to add. after several tanks of e5 i have the following observations:
1. the mileage has improved by ~10%. i would expect it to be the other way around because e5 is a lower calorific value fuel but the numbers say what they say…
2. i could not say about any improvements performance wise but i would not expect any noticeable differences there anyway
question to people in the know. does subaru have a "self learning/programming" ecu that would adjust to the type of fuel, driving style etc.?

Most new (00-01 on anyway) ecu's will adapt to a certain extent to different fuels.
this was very obvious in the 05 irish sti that I had. (totally standard)

I used to run E5 in it almost all the time, but the odd time i'd get caught and have to run 95.
If i got in and drove hard straight away having just filled with the 95, the car would go into limp mode.
I'd have to plug the 2 little leads above your shins together, drive easy for a few mins. Stop, un plug them and then it would usually be ok, as the ECU would adapt, and adjust the timing so it wouldnt go into limp again.

My car is mapped for E5 but when I used to fill it with normal petrol occasionally I didn't notice any difference at all.. What is this limp mode and how would you know if your car is gone into it?

Limp mode will stop the car revving above 4,000 or so and cut boost as well. E5 will only make a difference when you are flat out on full boost. If you are driving around like granny first gear with 95 in the tank, then you are grand but if you open her up then you run the risk of detonation which will eventually blow your engine. The car won't necessarily go into limp mode, but your newage ecu will try and pull timing and boost and you'll still be able to rev it but there's only so much it can do. If you drive her on with the wrong juice, then you are just asking for trouble :icon_sad:

There doing E5 fuel here in portlaoise now one of the local rally lads is after going maxol here in the last 2 months he is across from were the service area is here for the local portlaoise rally so very handy now

Melt a piston most likely.

Sorry for the thread revival guys.

Just a quick question regarding e5.Im out of the subaru scene a few years now.Is e5 still rated at 99 ron? Reason im asking is im looking to get a tuning software for my Clio track mobile that is tailered for mainly for uk cars running 98 ron (v-power id imagine)

Thinking of buying one but just making sure that e5 is still 98-99 ron and not 95 as i dont want to blow an engine.

I remember they used to sell it years and years ago in my local texaco, I had a glanza back then, no recession in the country, place was awash with fresh jap imports, it was a few pence more than standard and I was still one of the only people who ever used that pump!!
I guess no demand so no supply!

I think it will be suitable, im no petrochemist!! But my car ismapped for e5, never had an issue, only ever filled it with e5. Sure arent all high performance cars tailored for 98, m3's etc, presumably most use ordinary 95 over here!

I cant understand why though it makes no sense

They have massive tax on it afaik, thats why its not sold here anymore. Maxol get away with it because its only the ethanol added that increases the ron.

So do you think it would be safe to class e5 as 98 ron Rob?

I think its all the same petrol being sold everywhere now, its an EU directive that all petrol sold should contain 5% ethanol.

As for the ron rating, I would say 97 is a better rating for it. Whether Maxol can back up claims in the specific test to determine, 99.2 ron rating or not, uk mappers over here have said that it behaves like uk 97 during mapping.

Is mapping your kit not an option?
