E5 question...

I think its all the same petrol being sold everywhere now, its an EU directive that all petrol sold should contain 5% ethanol.

As for the ron rating, I would say 97 is a better rating for it. Whether Maxol can back up claims in the specific test to determine, 99.2 ron rating or not, uk mappers over here have said that it behaves like uk 97 during mapping.

Is mapping your kit not an option?

I could possibly get a custom map but im looking a t a kit called RS tuner..You get the kit and software and upload the maps yourself..Highly regarded in the uk.One of the maps is called the 98 ron map so id be cautious mapping it for e5 if it wasnt 98 ron minimum

I wonder if you emailed them saying no 98 in Ireland could the kit be tweeked for 95 before they send it to you

Probably not worth it.I think the whole idea is to make use of the higher ron.The map obviously wont give any real hp gains as its only a 2litre n/a clio but i believe it gives more low end torque which the Clio does suffer from.Doesnt really kick in unitl 5k

No harm in emailing and getting their opinion on it though.

ye I know what ya mean most revvy petrols are the same don't come on power til 4-5 k rpm I would ask the question you never know man they might

I noticed that the E5 stickers were removed from local Maxols around me recently. So do you reckon we could go to any petrol station now to fill up then instead of just Maxol? Would be a LOT more convenient! Any time i'm there there seems to be no end of boy racers filling up all sorts of boy racer mobiles. I think Maxol knows they have us by the balls with this ... is the better Maxol fuel more an urban myth than science fact these days?

I wouldn't like to say 100% yes, because I haven't tried it with a knocklink. If anyone is mapped for E5 and has a knocklink, they could let the tank run low, stick in a tenner's worth of "normal" petrol in and you'd know in minutes.

I'd do it myself but I mapped for local pump Texaco fuel so no good.

ciaran in asd done it and tested loads of places out of the 4 maxol's around him tallagh was the only 1 that there was e5 in the rest were all standard 95

If that was case then the other 3maxols were getting deliveries from other companies. I would doubt they would allow that.

im running on fumes now, was going to fill up on the way home, ill throw some non Maxol fuel in on the way home and monitor over the next few days with my Phormula Knock detector and see how it behaves

by Tallaght you mean Tymon North near Tallaght?
I used them few times recently, I cant see big difference (but I have only 160bhp so it would not be big diference:D).
I was using Topaz at Blessington Road (From Tallaght torwards Blessington) and it is fine for me, I dont know what RON their fuel is but it is ok for my Subaru.
Is Maxol have special pump with E5 or it is generally called unleaded on their station?
I filled my car today to full at maxol, will see if I get better mileage on it
Cheers

Another thing I just thought of. If it is true and lots of the Maxols are not using real E5 but just "regular 95" then that means that when the car was filled with the "fake" E5 from one of these stations and then road mapped after this for E5, then the car isn't really mapped for E5 at all then is it... even though driver and mapper thought it was :dontknow:

Seems to be a sh1t load of permutations going on here: cars not mapped running any fuel, cars supposedly mapped for E5 who aren't really, who are running either E5 or normal fuel but can't tell, cars who really were mapped with E5 in tank buying from dodgy Maxols who don't know or care what fuel is in refill tanker... :wall:

And then if a station gets deliveries from one truck one week and a different one the next the fuel could change every delivery too.

Mapper would have a fair Idea roughly what octane fuel was in the tank by the amount of ignition advance being run.

I dont think octane rating has much to do with mpg of the fuel, more the additives each garage adds to make it more "effecient" They say topaz fuel gets the best mpg from your car

My car just mapped by joe power and before I had about half a tank from maxol clontarf brand new station ciaran from asd said "its not great fuel"
Said one of his race cars can tell what type of quality fuel is in it on the fly.said same to me he has tested a load of stations said he wouldnt use anywhere but maxol across fr tymone park so thats where ill go have x2 bottles of nf booster in case I cant

But I dont understand how one maxol has better fuel than another, each individual garage doesnt refine its own fuel, surely thats all done way back the line and delivered via tanker??

i dont trust my Maxol at all, taken the E5 stickers off the pumps, general un-branded tankers filling up, sometimes other station branded tankers too, and over the last two fills my car is noticeably slower and less perky

even though i asked and they said they are still using Maxol fuel, i dont believe them :naughty:

Exactly a lot of paranoia here. Ethanol is pretty cheap to produce I can't imagine they have big vats of "cheap" fuel and other vats of E5 for select garages..sound like a load of nonsense and hassle to coordinate.

Quite simple really... it's all about what price the forecourt owner can get their fuel at.
See link to wholesale fuel prices in Ireland to give you an idea... http://www.forecourt.ie/Forecourt News/?p=31

Typically the big brands charge a higher fee per litre, so... even though your franchise contract dictates you should buy from brand X, if you can get your fuel 5, 8 or even 10 cents per litre cheaper of another brand... well you can bet the farm on the fact that some forecourt owners are going to get the odd fill of cheap stuff. :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

And that is while they are tied in to a brand as supplier... however as their contract comes to an end they may not renew the franchise and get cheap stuff all of the time while still carrying branding from a well known brand.

Add to this that not all forecourts have a high turn over of fuel so some may go stale due to the size of their tanks and the daily sales and then of course there are some old tanks with contaminates seeping in like water etc

... and what you end up with is wildly varying fuel quality. :hammerhead:

As per a recent post on the same topic... best fuel is probably from a Maxol selling Maxol E5 in a big and busy forecourt... the next best... any big brand in a big and busy forecourt so fuel doesn't get time to go stale.

If you want to be 100% sure... get mapped for RON95 or always use a quality booster like NF. It's what I did. :049:

Oh, and if anyone is interested I still have a couple of NF Street (+3 RON per tank) bottles which I was using before my recent map to RON95.

The franchises tend to shop around and get the cheapest they can but the retailed owned sites that are owned by the distributor as in Topaz garages with Topaz shops would use their own stuff. I emailed Maxol and never got a repsonse, thats nearly two weeks ago. Ill try Applegreen or Topaz next and see how my knocklink reacts if they all behave the same, i can assume they are all either 95 or all 97-99! I had "e5" in mine last time i was getting it mapped and Joe said its gone to shite recently , thats all i know

Maybe the club should chip in and buy one of these fuel analysis machines - its the only way to be sure
