WOW is all i say for this thread......................??????

Where do i start.................??????

99% of engine failures have an answer...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@SILVERTOOTH ? On a V3 wat engine management system was on car and who mapped her to 95ron???

@SIX SPOKE CLIVE? Again on a V4 wat engine management system was on car and who mapped her to 95ron??? And wat is the make of octane booster??

@BRIAN COLLINS Again on a V4 wat engine management system was on car and who mapped her to 95ron PLUS lUCAS??? And was there any other lead up factors to failure??

@SCOOBYIRL Again on a V4 wat engine management system was on car and who mapped her to 95ron??? And yours from explanation was failed oil pump/oil pressure

@MARK C Again on a V4 wat engine management system was on car and who mapped her to 95ron???

@WAGON DEC To hear that a company rebuild every impreza they sell is crazy.. £2K loss per car??
Don't think that is accurate.............. Why oh Why does this ""my mate dave said"" always show its head on forums???????
And to fit bearings is complete engine strip to its heart????????????????????????????? a grand for it to strip plus replace with all components isn't even sane to say???????????????????

@CECILDRUMSTICK. As RSRA says who stripped oil pump to search for defects? wat was service history??
and if main dealer that means nothing as you don't know wat apprentice is doing it..................

Summary of all the above is no one has giving technical details in full of engine failures and i am fully confident EVERY single failure has a reasonable explanation but in my opinion this thread is going to have a slagging effect on Subaru marque when it is undeserved. There is always an answer............

good point dave.
Mine was mapped by pat herborn. Apexi power fc ecu.
The only reasonable explanation to my failure was someone fitting the timing belt wrong before i bought the car, before pat mapped it. When i got my mechanic to fit a new timing belt he re set timing to where it should be, didn't do 500 miles before the engine started to knock.
Thats the only logical explanation i can come up with.

a belt slipping a tooth would NOT cause big end failure.............

AND POLL CAN BE TOTALLY DISREGARDED AS ANY ACCURATE INFORMATION

i think we should put things in prospective on this one, as i'm sure it will show greater reliability than failure. can we start a new tread(just to keep numbers seperate) of all cars that have not failed and details of mileage ,origan and if mapped. and i think one to add would be oil make and viscosity. there are so many variables on this subject its goana be hard to keep track: was the oil filter filled at oil changes, was the car drove for a period before it was mapped, is the car also used on track, there are so many factors that could effect the lifespan of an engine.

car brought into ireland with 100,000kms, i got it with 110,000kms, previous owner ran it unmapped with booster, i got it mapped by martin tracy with a power fc within weeks of getting it. 1 year later it lets go. that`s my story

Have to agree with Dave, this thread should put the final nail in the coffin for anyone trying to sell a Subaru, and posted in the general section too rather than members section

These cars are not like every other average car out there, they need specialist care & attention, even the basics of filling the oil filter with oil or the grade of oil you use is critical.

Dave what i actualy said was they fit bearing nothing about full rebuild just because we get raped for parts in irl does not mean its the same in uk also what i said was the company sells parts so engines are already out so dont know where you get a 2k loss from you could do a bearing swap in a couple of hours if the engine is out

exactly, thats why i think we should start a tread on cars that have not had failure. IF, and i mean IF looked after correctly these engines are well disigned and manufactured and extreemly reliable high performance engine. as said this tread could put the nail in the coffin of the lack of confidence in reliability of subaru's engines. nice to see it on isdc first.

Ya thats a very good point and think we sould do that . I'm sorry if what I was trying to find out came across wrong and obviously didn't mean to put the nail in anyone trying to sell a subaru cause I'm trying to sell one at the minute  just wether we like it or engines are going on people maybe if we put up thread RS is on about it might help someone in the future. :subaru:

dave it wasnt mapped at all but i ran it on 95 ron with lucas the car is at home since parked up until i have the money to fix it but i was to told its the crankshaft (big end bearings) the car is clocked and i didnt even realise until i took t belt cover off a jap sticker saying 120,000 kms and thats a year ago probably 140,000 kms on it since in ireland :icon_sad:

the lad i sold my 98 impreza irish turbo to blew the engine within two weeks of takin it because he drove the arse off it from the first minute he drove it....constant hard driving must be a cause of any engine failure aswell...

i agree they allways need a good trashin before they go, they never seem to go with everyday driving. its allways the hard blast on the motorway that does it. still cant explain my first legacy, a 92 irish car with 180k that i used as a track car for over a year and never missed a beat.

Mine is a 99 type r always serviced castrol magnatec 10w 40 mapped in the uk for super + now running on e5 no booster (not mapped for e5) and has never missed a beat.

@ dave, mine has an apexi power fc and was mapped by andy forrest with lucas juice.

Some thread lads. i have had 4 scoobys to date all shapes and sizes . latest is a v8 jap sti. mapped by pat herborn. Always spent whatever they needed. and not one them ever let me down. so looking after them is no.1

We are talking about a 2 litre engine producing 250 + bhp standard and a lot of them over 10 years old, Some engine's will die, think about it. Engine's die in Evo's and Cossie's, GTiR's etc, just as much, I know, I build them, and have done as much Fords as Subaru's. I belive Subaru's lose some oil pressure at constant high rpm, and the crank will suffer. No3 is the first to go as it run's slightly hotter than the rest, but when stripped, there is alway's significant wear on all bearings. Fitting an uprated pump and mapping the engine help's, but your doing it on an engine that has covered 50K.

Lads keep the info coming !!!!

Great thread Gerry

Lads im sure anybody reading this as a possible new scooby owner
might be a little concerned and may not understand where we are going with
this one .

So im going to ask the Site Moderators to move it to Members Section .

So Far we have :

5 cars that where mapped (jap)

9 cars that where not mapped (jap)

5 cars that where Irish

I think it's fair to say that we all expected a high no. of Jap cars not mapped to give trouble
but I definitly am surprised at the amount of mapped and Irish spec cars giving trouble.

Normaly Irish spec cars are bullet proof once serviced on a regular basis :dontknow:
and a mapped car ............WHY ????

Lads i think it's important we get to the bottom of this as a lot of members here get cars mapped.

Niall.
