well lads, finally got around to buying a subaru after years of wanting.purchased this v5 coupe off a site member recently.looked and seemed like a minted.however the same evening i brought it home i heard the dreaded bottom end rattle.will need a rebuild.

apparently its a well known car off the site so any info would be appreciated.i have heard so many horror stories about engines going in the coupes.it was mapped for e5 petrol a year ago.there is 90,000 miles on the clock would this be a factor?as i heard the p1s have to be rebuilt after 70 odd

IMO just as a lad who dismantles scoobys v5/6 engines are softer, way softer than the 92-model,this is just my OPINION so nobodys to freak or anything,i sell the v5/6"s the minute they land, lads will tell you they never had a minutes bother with them but i"ve seen well maintained 5"s and 6"s doin in shell from as low as 70k for seemingly no reason, the older bottom ends seem to be more robust, just from my point of view,

That is unreally man! Holly god! I remember this car for sale alright. Can I just ask you and I dont know you or anything but did you do any big no-no's for that to happen? Eg. Donuts, bounce it off the limiter, Maybe drive it hard when its cold?

Again I dont know you and I certainly dont mean to offend you but these are things that can do the damage! But maybe you didnt do any of the above and its just one of those things! Bad luck anyway man. I hope you get it sorted. There are plenty of bargins out there as far as engine rebuilds goes so have a shop around!
I would reccommend Sti-Tunning as he's kinda a one-stop-shop for all things engined related but thats just my two cents.

Best of luck with it anyway

Thats a balls man.
I think its more the fact that the Coupe is geared so low that it is constantly having a high rev on the engine that she tends to give :icon_confused:

Plenty of traders on here and you should contact them all to get a good price.

I dont agree with you there man, I have a type-R and I dont have to rev the nuts out of my yoke to get where I want t go! Infact some weeks I set the rev limiter to 3k RPM and drive quite fine and happy where ever I want to go!

[/quote] i dont think pete is saying that the lad is driving the ring out of it my mate has a type r and its running way higher revs than my car with the uk 5th gear saying that @ 60 mph my engine is under less stress. i think that is the point pete was getting at

I agree with you that you can drive them down low in the revs, but when your up on speed it is high reving . . .

Awh I understand no harm fella, my bad for taking you up wrong!

Dont let it put you off anyway Gambit, get it sorted and start enjoying it! They can be tempermental but there is all the advice you need on here and if you stick to it you'll be sorted!

Bad luck Gambit. It remember the car for sale here. It looks a minter and it just unfortunate the engine gave up the evening you bought it. Get onto Dave at STi-Tuning, he has some new year deals at the moment.

they are not softer as they have forged pistons towards the older cars, so really the type r engines are stronger and all bottom end bearings go on all cars,i think theres a few reasons why these engines like to drop a bottom end

all the type r's are factory mapped for 101 ron fuel towards the earlier cars mapped for 98 ron fuel
the diff controller in all the type r's let lads do donuts a lot easier than in a standard turbo, which contribute to oil starvation
type r's like to rev higher because of there low ratio box

bad luck with the car lad but as above did you drive the nuts off her or do lots of donuts because i be pretty pissed of with it if you didnt

ali up north is doing some great prices on engine rebuilds and the work is some of the best around, think pete got an engine built off him for handy money he is a trader on here you will find his number in the traders section. Hope this helps man deffo shop around for prices

I think the lower gearing cant help, if you have a type r driven for 70k miles at 60mph in 5th it will always be doing 500 to 700 rpms more than a 4dr sti.. i cant remember the exact rev /gearing difference at moment but say its only 500rpms.. 500 rpms multiplied by say 70k miles is alot more wear compare to a higher geared car, i dont know how people can say that this wouldnt contribute to them being more prone to failure

Maybe i'm the only one thinking this :cuckoo:...............but if i bought a car(whether or not its from a member here) and the engine went that evening i'd be bringing it straight back to him and demanding my money back. Don't know the in's and the out's of what kind of deal was done, whether it was sold as seen or if you got it at a knock down price but there is no way i'd accept that. If it was to go a forthnight or a month after you bought i'd say thats unlucky and they're the breaks but not that evening.

it was purchased a 5pm on a sunday in portloais, driven carefully to my home in clare and washed, my mechanic friend called over at 10pm and we went for a quick spin and heard the rattle as we pulled into my yard.i would never dog a car like this with rings and doughnuts.i have owened mr2 turbos,gt4s civics and integra type r etc never spared a cent on maintenance.this is the first one i have really got burned with.

i was very pickey about this coupe having heard the bad stories about lads not maintaining them right and our petrol not doing them any good.the car was apparently ecu tek mapped for e5 by rob rawall through sti tuning last year.if this map wasnt done correct could this have led to the failure?also its intresting no trader will give any form of warrenty with a rebuild even a standard one like mine.is that because it could fail again any time?the present engine has 90,000 miles on the clock and i would hope a rebuild would do something like that.even a rx7 will give you 50,000 before it call it a day.
i dont want to be putting my money into a ticking time bomb..

I wouldn't go blaming the mapper as it lasted over a year, and he's a well known mapper that regularly does an excellent job. It could be that a bad batch of fuel was put in or had been dogged before you got it, or a combination of both. Because of the variables that people put their cars through (Abuse, fuelling etc) is the main reason tuning companies don't give you a guarantee.

But I'd be thinking the same lines as Rory there, If I bought something and it blew the same day, and I knew I did nothing wrong, i'd be straight back to whoever I bought it off, club member or not. I wouldn't mind if I got a few weeks or months out of it but a few hours is a bit rough IMO.

*edit*

Meant to ask did you put fuel in it?
And did you check that there was enough oil?

done want to open a can of worms here as it was purchased from a current member in good faith.to answer your questions no i didnt put fuel in it it came with a full tank.and oil was fine when changover took place(he showed me around the engine).i rang the owner that night told him the story,my mechanic talked to him, asking for my money back he refused insisting the car was perfect when he handed it over.

o believe me i have stressed long and hard about the situation, but unfair as it is i purchased it private in good faith,so i have no comeback.bottom line is its doing me no good staring me in the face parked at home.iam stuck with it.

Have to look at it from sellers point of view, what more can he do? there was no noise in it when you bought it, how would anyone be to know that a noise was going to come into it?????
If i sold that car to someone, and it was perfect when leaving my yard and had never given me trouble and the buyer arrived back next day with big ends rattling i would straight away say he was doing rings in it or just dogging it
"my mechanic friend called over at 10pm and we went for a quick spin and heard the rattle as we pulled into my yard.i would never dog a car like this"
I imagine that anyone who is into these cars are into them for there power aswell as looks, and not blaming anyone, but i would find it hard to beleive that you brought your mechanic friend for a spin and didnt drive her on,
I know that you are gutted, and i feel sorry for you, but as far as going back to seller, blaming mapper etc etc, your waisting your time, its no ones fault, thats the luck of the draw im afraid.

That's very true Ken, I'd just be snapping though as he probably is too and trying/wishing I could give it back, but your dead right in what you said above. If someone came back to me in the same situation I'd probably assume the same and refuse to refund.
