As Dec has said... The only diesel to buy is s low mileage one. They all give trouble when they get higher up the mileage. I'd buy a merc estate or a BMW 3 series estate as loads of companies now do cheap parts for the older ones.... And the BMW's are good engined cars and solid yokes.

I'd go audi a4 or a6. Just picked up an a4 2.5 Tdi quattro sport saloon and its some machine. Easy on diesel as well. I'm getting 43mpg and I've been pushing it on as much as i did my bugeye Sti. The a4 1.9 Tdi is no slouch either. I test drove a few in the last few weeks and they're a nice comfortable car to drive.

I havent either, i think i remeber a guy telling me his does 40+mpg, which is less than a good diesel car but good for a 4wd. Its not a pig of a jeep and ive driven a petrol one before and it felt like a car, but yet they would be legal to pull a transporter etc etc

been toyota is a good starting point they're great on fuel but can give injector trouble and fuel pump failure

I need something thats gonna pull at least 45-50mpg and any sort of jeep is out purely because I'd have it 2 days and the missus would take it and I'd then be stuck full time in her fiesta :hammerhead:

Saabs are safe reliable cars and prices have dropped something savage since they folded , could be a bargain 9-3 or 9-5 tdi to be had , 2.2 i know but solid cars and last forever

less chavtastic than the a4 imo , nice bit of understated power

Just my opinion but steer a million miles clear of that 2.2 engine in either a Saab or a vauxhall/opel, my dad has a vectra sri diesel with the exact same 2.2 dti engine and its the biggest ball of dung on the road, has had fuel pump, turbo, injectors, egr valve list is endless replaced and its only turning 100,000 miles (and it wasn't clocked or taxied) just gives endless trouble.

A lot of the kitted A4's, Accords etc have gotten death at this stage, mazda 6 would be a nice compromise imo.

Had a 307 hdi on holidays for 3 weeks
Went everywhere in it great on juice I'd deffo have one.
