€5k to spend on a family wagon

I've been always recommending Mazda 6 as a good everyday car, as my family in Germany have used Mazdas since I remember and they just drive without giving trouble.

My sis bought 03 Mazda 6 diesel and after a year the engine went. The entire alu head has literally melted itself and in result the cheapest option was to replace the entire engine.. I've heard from the mechanics that it happens very often in Mazdas' TurboDiesel engines so I'm not sure about their reliability anymore... :dontknow:

Heard this too. Apparently mazda were or still are fixing the problem free of charge as it was a recall issue.

It happens with a lot of mazdas... Including petrols. I know of 3 mx5's that have melted heads due to minor over heating issues from clogged thermostat housings. Not as reliable as they're made put to be.

mazda 6 is a great car, but only petrol versions. i would not touch anything mazda dieselish since mazda 626.

i really think that moaning ( no offence ) about saab being built on vectra base is too harsh. Just because its on vectra base, it does not mean its bad or worse car for it. With saab gone, there are a lot of saab owner panic, so you can get a BARGAIN of a saab these days. keep in mind that saab going down, does not mean there will be problem getting parts. you will still get everything in motor factors, there are few saab websites on UK ( which will be cheaper, then dealer here anyway ), which have parts for saabs too. Rover is gone for years and there are still loads of rovers on the road.

one ting to know about saabs is that 9-5 ( up to 04 )petrol ones had sludge problem, but you are not looking in to petrol.

if you want a good reliable diesel, then get Pug 406 2.0 diesel. you could pick up one for around 1k-2k eu and save a lot of money. Its very reliable, economical and very comfortable. noise deadening is one of the best ever i had experienced. my clk200 was worse then my 00' 406. OFC you will get people who will say - PUG are crap, all french stuff is crap. haters gonna hate, but 406 is a TANK. i owned 1.8 one myself. misses used it to go from cork to Ennis 6 days per week for 4 months. never missed a beat. in 2 years of ownership i changed only oil and brake pads. Sold it to my friend ( still regret it ) and she is still driving it 3 years later. She even forgot once that her nct was expired, booked it and passed it, mechanic did not even sow that car.

Did a complete 360 and have gotten it into my head that I want a BMW E39 530D, even though the tax is astronomical :cuckoo:

Anyone any experience or advice about them?

Dont, nothing wrong with the car, they are great but the tax - seriously - it will break your heart. Its crazy money down the tube and you wont keep it after you have had to tax it!!

530d is not bad car, but keep in mind that cooling system on them is balls. its just a few plastic tubes.

then there is a thing about auto boxes, just have to be on the ball with oil changes in those. i would even change oil as soon as you buy one, just to be on safe side.

biggest bmw diesel problem - swirl flaps

those get dirty very fast and then they break off and get inside of the engine and destroys it in few seconds. You can upgrade them ( and you should ) as soon as you buy a 530d or *20d.

When you buy one, make sure the suspension is in a good nick, heavy german bastards dont like lovely irish roads. if you can get it up on the lift. go to nearest indy garage and ask them to use their lift for few minutes, might cost you 10-20 quid, but well worth it.

other then that its a lovely car with lots of power and good mpg.

Get a 525D and give it to Joe Power and you'll have a 530D under the bonnet. ;)

Only problem is they're like hen's teeth, there's one for sale in cork but I ain't going down there for one..

Nothing wrong with cork apart from being full of langers :icon_lol:

I've just had my fill of travelling long distances to see dogs of cars and having to turn around home empty handed. At least looking at something in or around Dublin means I can go to see the car in the evening and then get someone to check the car over for me as well without having to drag them cross country.

Friend of mine recently sold a gorgeous red touring that he did a lot of work on. Was only a touch over 5k advertised but never asked what it went for. After the exhaust and remap on it, it sounded and went like a turbo petrol. The only give away was the rev counter on it. Didn't even sound like a diesel!

He fully resprayed it. LED rear lights, M5 door cars with leather arm rests, M-Sport interior trim, headliner, suspension, rear bumper, Full electric Black Heritage Nappa Leather heated seats with Lumbar support from an M5, M5 mirrors, M5 rear callipers, ECO-Tune catback stainless exhaust, 2 front decats and a Joe Power remap to 212bhp and 365ftlb of Torque.

had a petrol 525i in black with cream leather
loved it
always liked the grey aswell
that and the blood red type colour in them are lovely
stick on 18 inch m paralell wheels , m5 kidney grilles and it would be lovely
id consider one of these myself for a everyday car
id be afraid off the cost of repairs (parts wise)
but i always loved this model
