Hi All,

Newbie here from Galway. Currently not driving anything exciting (diesel Mondeo) but hoping to remedy that situation soon. Have had some fast(ish) stuff back in the day but sad to say never had a Subaru. So plan is to scratch that itch and get one :)

So I may be asking for advice down the line. Would be looking to getting a WRX as would it be a daily driver, probably a blob eye. I do about 10k miles a year, so thinking an STI maybe too much for a daily driver. Would a WRX be a good daily? Obviously I do not expect great mpg, but in terms of comfort and reliability would they do 10k a year without much hassle?

Main concern is insurance at the moment, I am 38, full NCB, so hoping it will be ok, but heard it is very hard to insure a WRX at the min. if anyone has advice on it that would be great, i.e. who is good for insuring them and roughly what to expect to pay.

Thanks a mil all.

Welcome along, have a look at the "who are you insured with" thread here, that may be of use to you

Welcome along
There Great cars
Buy right and be trouble free
buy wrong and you'll have lots of trouble
nice standard blob in wicklow with only 65k miles on it
cant find it now but its on one of the classified websites if you search you might find it
if is what it looks then id reckon be trouble free motoring
Irish WRX cars are easier to insure than JDM Cars also
Best of luck in your search

Welcome along and happy searching.
Insurance is going to cost you. First you need to find someone willing to insure you then a price you willing to pay. I would get sample reg number and ring aroundjust to get a feel. As colm said euro easier that jdm.
Fuel l dont think there is sereous difference between wrx and sti, if you doing motorway milage sti could be better with the 6th gear.

Very warm welcome, youve come to the right place.

First i would budget towards what car you want, and what you intend to use it for. WRX are great cars and have nice power, STi are more powerfull but tend to like the petrol more but as previously mentioned have that 6th gear, shorter gearing negates this somewhat but can comfortably return 28ishMPG when mapped correctly.

Jap imports are tough to insure and youd be lucky to see under a grand i would imagine, so original Irish car might be the way to look there.

Another aspect on your decision is STi parts can be more expensive than WRX but there are enough dealers on here that you will usually get the best deal available.

Blobs are lovely cars and at a very nice price, bugs are getting on in years and are an aquired taste but IMO beautiful when done right (see a few members cars on here for proof) and hawks are beautiful, but expensive, both to buy and to tax. But low down torque is awesome. And there are always hatches or classics if youre feeling that way inclined, both are amazing cars in their own way.

Get a number youre happy with spending, then put a wishlist together, ring a few insurance companies, and most importantly go through the potential purchase with a fine tooth comb as there is a lot of scrap out there. Lads on here are a wealth of information so dont be afraid to ask.

Thanks guys,

Was thinking WRX over :STi: purely that most of the time it would be just going to and from work during the week (I also try to cycle as much as can), then at weekend the odd trip home which is mainly motorway, so my fun driving is only going to be about 5% or less of the time. Had a Mk5 Gti before and it was fine for a daily just not exciting enough. Also had an Evo 5 before and it was too highly strung for a daily driver, so from what I read thought a WRX would be suitable for a daily driver, while being fun. But would love an :STi: if could afford and have space for a weekend or second car. But if you guys think my thinking is wrong then I would consider an STI as my daily :)

Saw that WRX blob in Wicklow alright, it looks like a nice low mileage standard car, will be one I would be checking out when moving on a car. Was going to keep it to an Irish or UK model for insurance reasons, and hoping I would insure one for €1k or less if possible. Once get a few things in order will be putting the current car up for sale and then checking out my options then. Hope with the media, etc. putting pressure on the current hike in insurance premiums the madness will stop soon, but I am afraid that is wishful thinking.

Was also considering a 2.5 Turbo Focus ST, but need a 5 door which is hard come by so if can insure a WRX it is more than likely my next car :)

You've done your homework I see [emoji106]
I had a mk4 gti and found it thirstiest than my Subaru turbo 2000.
Is be checking the Wicklow one if clean and price can be got down a bit should hold its quiet well I think [emoji106]

Just checked there and cannot find that one in Wicklow anymore, so it may be sold :( .

Ideally would prefer a blob eye, after a 22B it is my favorite shape Impreza, but saw that Hawkeye on another forum and it is a nice wagon and at a very good price. Probably makes the most sense to buy really, but just my heart is set on a blob. Anyway have to check out insurance and flog my own car first, then I can have fun making these tough decisions :)

Want a 22B myself but 60 to 80 Gbp it will never happen ????
