I wish it was like that in this countryWAGON DEC said:i think road tax should be abolished all together and it should be payed through the fuel you use that is the only fair emissions based way to do ,because if you think about it lets say a focus 1.6 diesel they emit 104 grams of co per km. a subaru sti is 243 grams per km so if like my womans car for work she does 60,000 km per year that makes her car emit 6.24 tons a year. an sti on average probably does 10000 -15000 we will say 15000 for the sake of it that means the sti emits 3.645 tons so by paying through the fuel the focus pays nearly double the tax as it should do because it has more emissions per year .the only problem here is the sacks have fuel already taxed to the hilt

I know it would be difficult to implement but maybe a sliding scale tax based on the value of the car would be very fair, therefore the older the car the cheaper the tax.
but as I say time and time again TAX IS NOT MENT TO BE FAIR

From SIMI, fuel duty approx 2.5bn in 2010, with road tax approx 1bn

They will continue to shaft the motorist as we are relatively benign and motor fuel (like most energy) is price inelastic, so regardless of what the price of fuel is, people still fill up as they need to get to work, drop kids to school etc. Ok they may think about taking needless long journeys but by and large people need to fuel their cars. They showed their true colours by incentivising people into buying eco-friendly small cars. Once they got them, then they upped the tax. Expect a tax weighting on diesel in the next few years when some genius figures out that 70% of the motoring population buying new cars now buys a diesel car.
