A leak down test and compression test are different. A compression tester is catching pressure as it builds with each turn of the engine.

A leak down is putting pressure evenly in to the cylinder at TDC until it begins to leak. Depending on where the leak comes from, that indicates problem area. If leak is heard through the oil cap or dip stick it points to piston rings. If leak is heard through airbox it points towards intake valve issue. If leak is heard anywhere along the exhaust system it points towards exhaust valve issue.

Once problem area is found the only way to fix is to strip down.
