Quality of petrol in Ireland

Good work Gerry defo a very interesting thread for us here considering how rubbish the fuel is and how the scoobys are sensitive to varying quality

Run miles plus myself too as above

First of all... Great work there Zeiko!

Not surprised Maxol came out as very good (best tested to date)...

Over the years I found the two suppliers to give the best results (on cars I owned that were very sensitive to good/bad petrol) were ESSO and Maxol... and Texaco not too bad either (but other two were better). Would really notice it in my STI V3 and the JCW R56 if I got fuel elsewhere. After Topaz took over Esso the quality dropped for sure.

Really brilliant to see this testing to give us a better idea of where to get (the best) fuel. If only we could get the word out far and wide so anyone with a performance car would aim for the suppliers with the best juice... then maybe it would put a bit of pressure on the rest of the ones taking the mick and selling us below 95RON cr@p.

Might see what info I can get from the Hawk with my diagnostic box of tricks when she's back on the road later this year. So far (touch wood) my det/knock never went off on the dash (was tuned for ESSO RON95, but with a bit of margin left for safety)... but then mostly I get fuel in Maxol as have a few of them near me.

Keadeen: This is still work in progress, still few ideas to do before I can wrap it up. I did have plan of putting this research on backroads forum as well.

Problem is, even if we managed to get 100% of performance cars in whole ireland to never go to any of the bad petrol stations, its just a spit in an ocean, they wouldnt see difference in their numbers... too many micra and fiesta drivers around, who couldnt care less where they take their petrol

I always run the Circle K + from beside clarehall/clayton but defo gona try that Maxol from that station when the car is back on the road. Savage work testing these :D

As a side note, any recommendations for a stand alone knock detector , been looking at the KSI but at ?300+ its a bit steep. GLINK do one but its just a light, it doesnt give any info regarding the readings..

That maxol garage does be busy enough during the day I would pass it quiet a lot during the week would fill the van up there regularly but wouldn?t notice much in that sense my own car usually get Texaco and done well on the day [emoji6].
That maxol garage no matter what time day or night I always see same lad working there [emoji23][emoji23] talk about not being overstaffed

This is super interesting, thanks so much for such a fantastic post.

I drive a diesel (sorry sorry!!) Irish Legacy and would love to figure out something similar for the diesel here too.

From previous attempts I had found the Texaco diesel to be giving me the best MPG so tended to stick to that.

would love to hear thoughts on that one too. Need to go figure out things I think again.

Enda: This would be an alternative to the box I bought for my car: https://youtu.be/uwL4S3xr-0M?t=881

Cobb Accessport works with WRX and STI afaik, and should support them all the way from bugeye up to the new models, but do your research before buying. They are not cheap, but it will allow you to install Off the shelf tune for your car and have some more diagnostics available. I dont think its good investment buying it for diagnostics only, but if you are looking to tune your vehicle, it may be viable option.

Kamili: Sorry bud, no knowledge about Diesels in general. But have heard horror stories about Applegreen, and currently have no reason believing that petrol station that has shitty petrol will have good diesel - so I would assume choosing Circle K and Maxol might be a good idea:)

My DC5 and STI loved the Maxol on the Navan Road heading in to City Centre.

The STI had a knocklink in the dash cowl and it'd light up like an Xmas tree with Topaz in it, a little bit with Applegreen, but only gave an odd flicker with Texaco and Maxol.

If I put Topaz in it, I'd have to put NF in to keep it safe.

Just had a chat with someone who works for accounting in Circle K and suggested to them that there is a market here for 98Ron fuel and that it might be worthwhile for them to trial it out.

Doing my bit of all of us Petrol heads :p

the reason it was phased out of the market was because government whacked on high tax on the premium fuel as far as i remember, cant find the most recent tax rates but going by 1999 finance act super unleaded was almost 7pence per litre higher excise duty so almost 9 cents, that doesnt include vat and actual higher cost to supply premium unleaded. You would be talking 10 to 15 cent dearer per litre than standard unleaded i would imagine if current excise duty is the same.

Looks like Avgas is where we need to be

Aviation high octane fuel is BRILLIANT!

Tightly controlled though... and hence hard got.

Back in the day... 1:1 or 1:2 mix with pump stuff for the rally cars... was the way to go... great go out of it... and a great smell too lol. :049:

The aviation gas is under tax now as well it seems - at least for private usage, you can still claim your taxes back as commercial flight business

http://www.sligoairport.com/Sligo-Airport-Fuel-Available.html

This is retarded, why are companies that are generating millions of euro of profit every year exempt from tax, and poor lad that makes few thousand a year is taxed to oblivion... this logic just doesnt make sense to me as an average uneducated joe:(

Makes perfect sense when you realize you are living in corporate ireland where big corpo pay no tax and you are taxed to the bollix. Sure we didnt want to Apple's money, where they payed 50E tax on every million profit. And we are dreading the end of every tax year :54:

Yes, but taxing all businesses that are running their revenue through Ireland by 1% more will allow the government to lower taxes for all working citizens with bellow average salaries by 5% and still make more than they are making now

I have started using ethanol in with my normal fill up, 15L of 97% ethanol to a full tank of fuel so probably 45L unleaded give or take. You can buy it up north, i imagine another maybe 5% ethanol into the subarus would help a lot? I think the mix in using is about 1000 ron, its not so cost effective but depending on your mileage it may be a good option.

In the 335 im running MHD software which lets you change the map from your android phone basically. Each stage of map has various levels from 95 all they way up to e85 support. The car is running very well. Had it down Mondello today and it was great, only let down by the standard suspension

You and your fancy electronic gizmos! lol

The 335i is a great platform for the fuel conundrums I reckon and plenty of support like you said from the outfits like MHD and Berger Tuning etc.

Sadly here, at least, we don't have that luxury for off the shelf maps etc. The Cobb Access Port in the USA would be a good one to have I reckon but it's price is prohibitive here.

With regards to exacting more power, efficiency and reliability out of the Subarus, I would highly recommend to look into Water Methanol Injection. It was suggested to me by a good friend and I think with our poor fuel the benefits outweight the little annoyances as long as you know what you are getting into.

Given the amount of experience you have and the fact that not many of us are really knowledgeable about it, I would really appreciate if you'd do some nice write up, how much it costs, what it involves etc?
