Ive worked on more Subarus then most on here. Pulled apart 700-800 engines. High mileage. Low mileage. And all in between.Autoworks Danny said:ITS got nothing to do with the plastic impellers as far as I'm concerned the front bearing in the water pump does as much work and has as much load on it from the timing belt as the tensionors do and for the price of a pump I wouldn't risk it but that's just my opinion after seeing them faildavelegacy™ said:Yep always on them. Plastic propellers etc.gerry said:My garage has never changed the water pump on any of my sti's either they reckon there is no need , but on my passat and van water pump always changed with belt
And have seen one water pump issue in 8 years.
Scaring people into changing something that doesnt need to be is not right way about things. If you have seen multiple on subarus then i would need to question condition/history of cars you were working on.
Re load etc.
On timimg idlers you car hear the wear on bearing. And also feel play in half the cases. The water pump will always be checked. But we never find even with 150k miles to be compared to an idler pulley.
