My garage has never changed the water pump on any of my sti's either they reckon there is no need , but on my passat and van water pump always changed with belt
Yep always on them. Plastic propellers etc.
ITS got nothing to do with the plastic impellers as far as I'm concerned the front bearing in the water pump does as much work and has as much load on it from the timing belt as the tensionors do and for the price of a pump I wouldn't risk it but that's just my opinion after seeing them fail
Ive worked on more Subarus then most on here. Pulled apart 700-800 engines. High mileage. Low mileage. And all in between.

And have seen one water pump issue in 8 years.

Scaring people into changing something that doesnt need to be is not right way about things. If you have seen multiple on subarus then i would need to question condition/history of cars you were working on.

Re load etc.

On timimg idlers you car hear the wear on bearing. And also feel play in half the cases. The water pump will always be checked. But we never find even with 150k miles to be compared to an idler pulley.

I wasn't asking you to beat your chest and carry on you are not the only 1 that works on subarus around the place I worked for possum bourn rally sport back at home who if you know subaru built alot of world rally cars and did my trade under the subaru Australia head team mechanic but I didn't come here for a pissing match was only giving my professional opinion as you where doing

Been a newbie decided to get the water pump done when the belts were being done, :xmas_cheers: every day is a learning curve, didn't mean to put the cat among the pigeons.

Exactly.

As was i.

I'd have to agree with Danny here I always change any pump that the belt runs on regardless of manufacturer it does as much work as any pulley in the belt system, but everyone has their own opinions on things :)

There was no cat among the pigeons dude just a good discussion the best part about this site can have different opinions and not fall out over it :multijump:
