Splitter Wrapping

My splitter is annoying me as its a few different shades of black when viewed up close so I want to wrap it in matt black but dunno whether to do it myself or get someone to do it for me.

Is it worth trying it myself and if so, where can I buy the wrap?

Any idea what it would cost to get it wrapped?

robbie did you consider to get it "dipped" rather than wrapped . or would you not just spray it . :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: just thinking out loud !

I wouldn't say the dipping is that resistant to stone chips though Ross.... or painting it either.

I'll try source some some 3M satin black wrap through work Robbie... needs some for the Type R... and I'll give you an off-cut to do the spitter... it should work well so long as you take your time and use plenty of heat to stretch it... may be a two person job TBH... I can give you a dig out if you like.

@johnk - thanks for the link

@ross - was going to spray it but because its plastic, the flexibilty means its likely to crack before long. Not to mention, with my monkey wrench hands, it'd probably be cracked even before I get it fitted. Plus buying all the primers, plastic, filler and normal, long with the paint, I thought it'd be cheaper to get some of the wrap and give it a go myself. Never thought of the dipping, don't know what sort of protection that would give? How thick is the finish on it? Is be afraid one stone chip would cut through it and start to peel it :dontknow:

@jamie - that'd be class man would really appreciate it

You could wrap it alright with some of the carbon affect vinyl or just the matt stuff. you would need a fairly large piece to do a splitter though. once there is no mad corners or edges to mould it around you should be grand

dipping applies a "cling-film" type layer afaik

plasti dip spray it . flexible so wont crack .....posssibly

if sprayed/dipped ,surely a protective but flexible laquer/ sealant could be applied to prevent chipping

if wrapped ,surely stone chips could rip the viynl also .

iv a small amount of carbon wrap but nowhere near enough to do a splitter

think "charlieskunkweed" on scoobyireland has his prodrive splitter carbon wrapped , possibly ask how its holding up :dontknow:

The proper wrap is resistant against stone chips, same on the cars like when people put the clear wrap on the front bumper, bonnet, etc.

Quite a large piece needed alright so will see if Jamie can source it.

If not, that plastidip paint might be worth a shot, never thought of that

Got mine done for 90 quid in a slight carbon wrap.
Would not fancy doing it myself.

The lad that did it for me said it was a nightmare to do and he does that for a living.
I wouldn't attempt it myself if I were you!

You need a fairly big sheet too to mould it around all curves of a splitter.
Not cheap to buy as I priced it before.

If its just black plastic and its fading, just get a heat gun and heat it slowley and it will turn back to its orignal colour in front of your eyes . This should save a few euro make it look like new.....

heard this works also

Tried it before and it worked alright but still a bit pitchy. And I kind of want the satin/matt finish now as I think it will look better and a little more subdued than the shiny plastic

With Graham saying €90, I'm thinking plastidip paint might be the way forward for the sake of €20.

that sounds a good idea

You should try Wurth plastic dye, ideal for any plastic, gives a matt finish, and can be applied every time you clean the car.We are using it for years in our garage to dress all sorts of plastic trims, much cheaper option.

2 cans should sort you. pity its not available anywhere in ireland, if it is i couldnt find it! Make sure you build it up in light layers and leave it dry for at least an hour between each coat. 4-5 coats to build it up to a thick layer that can easily be pulled off is best.

Thanks Kilfree, I've tried a few different products I have on it but while it helps a little, it still leaves the difference in shading. I think its the way the plastic is, its non-porous so doesn't absorb the product :hammerhead:
