Actually did this last night
Paid for the car and picked it up!
-Bought an oil change and battery
-Installed a new Battery
-Drove to Howth for chips
-My wife asked if it's okay to eat in the car (She's a keeper)
-I said yes, but not after I detail it
-She laughed and said of course (Deffo Keeper!)
Nearly didn't pick it up, if I hadn't applied for my Irish Drivers Permit, I'd be okay, with an American License... BUT it takes precedence, so they said, In effect, I'm a brand new driver on the permit. I informed them I've been driving for 17 years and being not just a standard... and have a clean driving record for TEN YEARS + So they asked me to prove it, I called up my insurance company in America. They confirmed that other than hitting a deer and a hail storm damaging my car (both non-fault) that I do indeed have a fault-less record as far back as they could see (5 years)...
Insurance with "new driver on Irish permit" = 2,000 euro/year
Insurance with "Irish permit, but 5+ years no faults" = 500/year (They said it might go down a bit more once I get my Full Irish Breakfast... er License
So yes, I was more than happy to spend an hour on the phone to America, tracking down my driving record
It's so weird going from a fully licensed chauffeur with no tickets and clean history to "NEWB" and then being told I have to pay 1500 EXTRA. I nearly fell out of my chair.

Welcome to Ireland, the land of rip off car insurance companies and ridiculous policies!
