€5k to spend on a family wagon

Looking for a new family car,

- Must be diesel due to the mileage I do
- 2L max for tax purposes (think I will have to tax this one, ha!)
- Big enough for a 2+2 family
- Stylish enough that I'm not embarrassed to be seen in it

Recommendations please

just start going looking at cars
you buying trade or private
garages are falling like dominoes at the moment
so there falling over them selves to sell cars
would you buy ex fleet type stuff
does it have to be mint ?
saloon and hatchback only or what

I want to know what to go and look at first Colm, whats the best to look at in that price range etc.

Car doesn't have to be showroom, not at €5k but I'd expect it to be reasonably well kept.

Private or garage or ex fleet doesn't matter, I'll get ciaran to give it the once over before buying anyway so I know it'll be mechanically sound

Should pick up a Mazda 6 for that money. Bulletproof cars and nice in the looks department. Come in diesels but look for service history in a diesel as there's a couple common faults. Likes of the intercooler etc sheering away. I know of a couple being used as taxi's and have plus 200k km on them and not a days bother because they've been maintained properly.

always would have seen saab as a family wagon thats safe and reliable , but hey maybe thats why they went bust :dontknow:

Thanks lads

@ Dec, I couldn't do it, too much of a soccer mom van for my liking.

@ Kanye, thats nice, a set of RS4 alloys and she'd be stunning.

known a few people who have had them from new and swore by them , but kept for 3 or 4 years then traded in ,

i'd tend to stay away from vw/audi stuff purely down to the amount of horror stories ive heard about the a4and golf diesels (turbo etc ) and the fact my work van (vw) is a pile of shite , over rated and overpriced .

what is safe to buy now ? cant think of many cars that havent some form of troubles

there are really only 3 tommy but they all give there problems at about 100+ miles

1.ford focus 1.8tdci ,problems are up to 06 injectors gave trouble and the flywheel can give trouble in them all
2.vw golf 1.9 -2.0 problems flywheel, turbo,injectors ,balance shaft chain on the 2.0 l
3.toyota corolla 1.4 d4d ,injectors and flywheels
you can see most have the same problems thats because most use the same suppliers for these parts

Ok, maybe Ican go to a 2.2 and only tax it 9 months of the year :icon_lol: .. What sort of options would this open for me? Are there better, more reliable engines in this category?
