farmer and dogs

I don't know what should I do and thought someone might have similar experience

The story: I live in a rural area about 6-7 miles outside of Athlone. Lots of big new houses around and fields as well. There is one big field right in front of My house which was empty for the last 1-1,5 Year. (Perfect place to play with My dog)
We went to holiday 3 weeks ago and only came back last night and noticed this morning they put new fence around the field and cleared it. -must be a new owner I thought.-

Later on the morning a Lady came to Our house - She lives a few houses down the road and Her dog used to come to Our garden every day to play with My boxer - and told Us the new Owner of the field Shot dead their little dog 2 days ago because it killed and Ate 2 or 3 of His sheep !! The dogs owner says the farmer left some meet on the field to make the dog to go to the field and than shot.
When I saw the farmer I put My dog on the lead and went to Him to introduce Ourselves and told Him We live right across the narrow road from His field and this is My dog. I do everything to keep Her in the garden but sometimes She does go for a little trip around , visits other dogs and comes back in a few hours. She is really friendly and would not hurt even a cat.
He said He Has no problem with the dog but if it goes to His field ............... He claims the neighbours dog was eating His sheep when He shot it.
I have a video of the dog He shot . Here they are playing with My boxer .Hard to believe this dog killed a sheep and ate it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW51cAkeQPM

When I went to talk to the farmer first He wasn't there but His van parked. The door half opened and left like this:

And the notice He left beside the road :

Does He have all the rights to shoot My dog if it goes to His field? No need to prove it was My dog did anything to His sheep before shooting?

As above, that little dog could catch up to a sheep not to mind take him off his legs and kill it.
He may have come across it after it was dead.

Even the thickest cnut would know that dog couldnt kill one, and if it was my dog regardless of him being in the right about the trespassing.
Id go up and shoot something else.

Offer him in for a cup of tea in the back yard and then pop him one

Why would you think that someone elses property is the perfect place for you to play with your dog?
Thats his livestock that dogs/foxes are chasing, killing. They can be shot.
I would imagine that he bated the land with poison to kill whatever meat eating animals are causing trouble.

I would shot someone s dog if it killed my livestock , a sheep is very defenceless and can't out run many other animals such as dogs , are you saying it's okay for dogs to kill sheep ? How do you propose to educate the dog not to do it again ? And is a dogs life worth more than a sheep life ? If another dog killed your dog would you be happy for it to roam about the area ?

I have both animals and others before any one says I am heartless ?

if he shot my dog i'd fckin poisen every bit of livestock on his poxy land, :angry1:
[/quote]

Why kill his livelihood if some else s dog is tresspassing ,people should keep their dogs under control and there wouldn't be a problem , I would love to have a tiger but I know I couldnt keep it under control ,therefore I dont have a tiger

Get your own land to play with your pets, would you let tayto with his horse tir na og to graze in your lawn?

weather it killed a sheep or not it shouldnt be on his land!!

a sheep is worth alot more than a dog, now dont get me wrong im a dog lover but i wouldnt let my dog off to play with other dogs and let them go into fiels that i dont own, a pack of dogs work together and can take down a few sheep no problem, your dog could be friendly but it can get a taste for blood out play hunting very easy.

if hes after shooting one dog allready i wouldnt take the chance as he will do it again no question asked.

We all love dogs but at the end of the day they are predators and even the friendliest dog can get blood lust.

It was a perfect place to play with My dog because there was no livestock on the field for about 1,5 years and I met the previous owner every day and He Had no problem with Me going to the field with My dog.
To Me it is clear that little dog could not hurt a sheep in any way and even if the farmer thinks it was that dog He could go to the owner (everyone knows everyone here) saying look keep Your dog locked and pay for My loss.
This is also a residential area with kids playing around but this guy felt in so serious danger because of that 10 inch high dog He Had to shoot.

I love dogs too, but if it killed his stock proper order to shoot it. I know a lad who shot his own boxer and rothweiller who had attacked a calf he owned and ate his ears off. Mick shot the dogs as he was afraid they could do it too his young nephews next door. They had never done anything before this but he said that hey now couldn't be trusted.
I'd steer clear of him Kevin

That tiny dog killed a sheep? Yeah :ponder2: OK :icon_rolleyes:

Very easily by chasing the sheep and the sheep dying from exhaustion ,and probably caring lambs as well , I know of a boxer dog who chased sheep ,the dog owners sheep, he gave it a second chance and the dog was in a neighbouring field next evening chasing a pair of donkey foals, the dog was put down by the owner ,and if he had nt some one else would have , dogs are hunters, turned to pets but will always be hunters
The dogs should not be in his field ,keep the pets under control or some one else will ,simple

People need to control there dogs and not let them out loose!! End of!

My dads dog... and english springer... badly injured a neighbours dogs...runty little terrier... a few years back while he was away and I was minding it. Neighbour came up a few hours later and balled me out of it saying that her dog was now in the vet after nearly having it's jaw torn off.

Fact of the matter was... our dog was on our property and minding it's own business... and her dog was out loose casuing agro around the estate when it came charging up the drive and into the back yard.

I told her she was lucky I wasn't getting the gardai involverd as her dog was let out unattended... and promptly told her to PISS OFF!

I had sheep a few years ago and travellers let there greyhounds hare hunting through my sheep and a few of the neighbours, the ewes were in lamb. they were ran around the field for god knows knows how long before we got them. I lost easily €1000 of sock as a result. Ewes aborted lambs and ewes died. A few of the neighbours were the same , one had sheep killed by dogs at night too.He lost a fortune he sayed up at night and a few dogs were at it needless to say he shot them.. I'd not like my dog to be shot so we have a fence system for him to run around and is safe there day and night and won't leave the area maybe you should look into getting something like it it was only €200 odd

The boxer in the video is My dog and still in live. That's the other dog got shot for "killing" the sheep.

So your suggesting that the owner of the small dog did no wrong yet he should pay for the farmers loss????why would he do that if his dog did nothing wrong?
And by saying to keep his dog locked up then I take it that the dog is roaming free?
Somebodys dog killed the mans sheep,But I bet every dog owner says it wasnt there dog

I know that , I am suggesting that it ran the life out of the sheep
And if it did then I did deserve to be shot

loose dogs a problem here too. Ive an American pitbull, didnt look for him rescued him and neutered him straight away. I get frowned at for having him and not using a muzzle, but we have to run the gauntlet of all the other angry loose dogs on the estate, little ones are the worst. my dog has been bitten 3 times by smaller dogs on the estate and one ended up biting a kid, after i told her she was not her dogs master, as he only came in at night, and showed no fear to anyone or anything!!! But i understand the fear that some trigger happy goon is outside if somethin goes wrong but on the other hand my parents dog was beatin with a shovel when the house was robbed so ya gotta just take precautions. You cannot let your property affect his property, if so you have no need to worryNeuter him if somethin happens without good cause though.

I do have a radio fence system for My dog and She is well trained. Still got Out somehow 2 or 3 times.
What I'm saying the owner of the dog did something wrong because His dog was free and I am sure He wouldn't mind paying for the farmers loss even tho everyone knows it wasn't His dog killing the sheep rather than loosing His dog.
I live here 2,5 years and some pet dogs( spaniel, jack russel and this terrier) from neighbours are running free and never anyone Had problem with them. Now it's changed. Next one will be the mini Jack russel lives on the other side of My house.

My brother had sheep killed in the last few years by dogs. A dog will wash himself clean before he goes home, if not caught in the
act he can get away for awhile.A dog needs to be under control at all times thats the law.
