So is it cops that are in these vans?? i dont recall seeing a private recruiting campaign to get people for these vans???

its privatised alright

There's a speed camera van parked on the road opposite my house now at the minute. The gardai are after pulling 4 cars in the space of ten minutes on the same stretch of road! Starting early.

I'm going to play devils advocate for a minute and show you a picture of these vans

1224283411771_1.jpg

And then I'm going to follow up by saying....

If you manage to miss this van parked on the side of the road & it catches you speeding then are you also likely to miss a little child that runs out from the side of the road...compare a 3 foot high child vs a 12 foot tall van with bright stickers etc!

Now I'm not for a second going to pretend that I've never broken the speed limit but just opening this thread up a little further for debate...

how could anyone miss that , they are a thousand times more visable than the garda vans which display nothing like that

to be honest, im very happy they have rolled all these out.. its about bloody time!! they should just put up fix speed cams by right everywhere like other countries, inside of paying people to do it.

Ireland is so behind some times.

I dont speed so it dont bother me, but we can all only hope it will help reduce the deaths on our roads.

I've lost friends due to them speeding - something you'll never forget!

Big van so they will just have to find a bigger tree to hide behind

Yes, this piece of info is interesting because IIRC, that's the same way the clamping in Dublin was presented to us all those years ago, to clear the streets, not gather revenue. What really pissed me off about the clamping in Dublin was that the private contractors were conducting their business in Bardas Atha Cliath vans. I also remember the operators I encountered, mostly as a witness, were all non Irish.

The way the speed cameras have been installed, that is to say the operators are paid by the hour and not on commision, may be the only way it could be introduced smoothly, but I believe that within 18 months or at the first revue, the terms of trade will change because these people are in business to maximise their profits which they can't do on an hourly basis. Once the Garda are dependant on this company, they will call the shots. At that point the revenue from fines will be a nice cash cow for the government and it's worth putting it in context - the current revenue generated from motoring offence fines is offset by the cost to the state both financially in the deployng of Gardai to execute traffic offences and the cost of deploying more Gardai to attend other law enforcement tasks. This is a win win situation for the government. Cynical? perhaps but look at the placement of a lot of these cameras.

We have seen this happen more recently with the M50 toll plaza which is privately operated despite the original agreement that it would be handed over to the state after so many years of operation but has now been renegotiated, this applies to the East Link as well. The clamping, as stated above is another example and the very poor and in breach of contractual behaviour by the Swiss company that operates the NCT. I am not at all happy with the way a private company (M50 toll) have access to state information - names and addresses of car registrations, use of which they made a collosal cock up of in the first year of operation. A friend of mine who lives in Wexford ended up in a legal wrangle because M50 fined them for not paying toll on a tractor that they used to own but was sold to a farmer down in Kerry, who could prove both he and the tractor were doing sillage in Kerry, on the day in question, and lets face it, a). Who drives a tractor up to Dublin from Kerry and b). Tractors are not allowed on the M way anyway, but it took nearly a year to sort and it cost them legal fees.

I suspect education and what remains of the public health service are next, despite the lessons that should have been learned from the UK and America.

Tommy. I live in Arklow and for most of the boom years, the main street was overcrowded with retards racing up and down, however, that situation is now out of date as many of them lost their vehicles due to the economy. In 2005, Arklow had the highest per capita number of "boy racers" (not to be confused with enthusiasts) in the country. In 2006, we had the highest number of speed bumps per urban mile than any other town in the country. In the end the real problem areas were the Duck pond and the beach road down to Roadstone. I drive up and down to Enniscorthy a good bit and there are a surprising number of "doughnuts" on the motorway but I think these are done during the early hours of the morning, and would the camera operators be working at these times? As they would be obliged to pay shift allowance and overtime if they operated all night, this would eat into their fixed profits, so I doubt it, but we will have to see I guess.

As a foot note and an end to my rant, unfortunately too many of us need the coercian of speed cameras to obey the limits and in that respect they are welcome, but someone in authority please show some initiative and gain respect from the public in the placement of these cameras. Let's by all means have the enforcement outside schools and in estates and residential areas.

I have to say I welcome these speed cameras. I have a pain in my hoop with people driving 2 inches from my bumper trying to push you on when doing the speed limit. I've been overtaken and flashed countless times in the speed limit areas because they think the limits don't apply to them :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

With the road works on the N7 at rathcoole the speed limit is 60kmph. Try stick to 60 and you'll be blown off the road by everyone.Traffic then backs up because of people jamming on and trying to get into lane because they thought it'd be quicker to speed up the outside or inside lane. A speed limit is a limit, not a suggested speed......

Perhaps if these cameras are independant it might make the cops slow down too... very rare they stick to speed limits or wait on red lights (while on the phone), or not park on double yellow lines or in handicapped spaces, but I guess thats for another thread...... :angry1:

jus seen an 10 ky reg'ed in navan parked on side of road , seen him before he seen me (i hope)

way more obivous than plain white van , stickers of "speed camera" and "slow down" on back doors .

Good point on the Gardai Dave. I have seen some very bad behaviour by younger gardai in the new high vis pursuit cars and have been tailgated and bullied onto the hard shoulder along with other cars on the N11 North of Arklow by these guys. It should be noted that none of these patrol cars were showing blue lights, siren or were in pursuit. Along with other road users, the Gardai are not allowed to use hand held mobiles while driving, they have a two way radio for official work. In the UK they aren't allowed to exceed the speed limit either unless they have their strobes on, don't know about here. For me though it goes back to the same thing about the police, wherever they are, generating respect from the public rather than contempt.

On tailgating, I used to drive an Isuzu Trooper with a hitch on the back and in those days, being tailgated didn't really bother me. If you really want the crap scared out of you, go to France, especially Brittany and Normandie. Drivers from that region bring a whole new meaning to tailgating at 100 - 120km/h, it is 2 feet or less. and when the crashes happen there it really is carnage, whole families wiped out.

@Fozzybear on tailgating and not to go too far off topic but:

Was coming home from work one morning on the N7 in the outside lane doing 100kmph when a car came up very quick behind me. Traffic on the inside lane so couldn't get over. He was so close I couldn't see the headlights in the rear view mirror so increased speed to about 120. Still there.... Then he pulled back and started to flash the headlights... Couldn't go anywhere so stupidly increased speed to 130 as he seemed to be getting quite irrate and I really wanted to get out of his way... Next thing on comes the blue lights!!!!!! Oh fook I thought... done now...

I put on the indicator and as soon as I could I pulled out of his way and was heading for the hard shoulder when off goes the lights and he floored it. He must have been doing 160 to 180 by the time he was out of sight!!!!! It was a wine coloured unmarked corrola hatch. Saw him do the exact same thing to a few other drivers on different mornings afterwards....

What a dangerous wa*ker :police:

i know 2 of these locations finglas rd and ballymun road having speed cameras there is

They have a number of KK reg vans too.
[/quote]

Sorry Daragh, I misread that the first time and thought you said they had a number of KKK vans, what, to get the brothers?

Here's a few pictures of the unmarked vans which will be in operation. From what I've heard, there won't just be one type.

I don't think they'll all be sporting high visibility stickers etc.
