hello, need info on subaru please.

Petrolheads
Hello lads. Long story short: i sold my 400hp skyline and i am looking for replacement. Subaru impreza is one of the options, so i would like to get some info on it.

1. I am looking for WRX model, but the highest one is STI? Much difference between them an is it worth it over WRX?
2. There are Jap and uk/irish versions out there. Any reason to go Jap version? i really dont want jap one, just because the issue with low quality petrol in ireland, but i will hear out the opinion of subaru heads first!
3. what sort of MPG can i expect from standart wrx/sti? i am doing very low millage and short trips mostly, but i realy dont want to get back in to the world of 18mpg. I know if you will push it hard it will burn fuel like crazy, but how much can you get on casual runs?
4. high millage wrx? seen few for sale with 133k miles. i am not a highmillagefob, but i never lived with boxer engine.
5. what to look in to when buying WRX? my budget is up to 7k only, so i guess i could get a cleanish bugeyed or newer for around that money?
6. how is it to live with wrx as daily driver? would that be a very attention seeking car? i guess usual service intervals are around 6k miles? what about diffs? any other running costs normal person would not know?
7. is it still an insurance company nightmare? i am 26 with 5 ncb, so insurance should not be a problem, but do they still charge it over the nose? much more premiums for jap?

cheers for any info lads. i am doing my homework, before i am getting that new car!

if i were you i would look for insurance on one before anything else for a start, as they are a pig to insure.

coming from a skyline i wouldnt go for a wrx as it will be a big step back in power and preformance.

theres only two cars that will do it for you on your budget.

03 sti or 98/00 sti type ra/ (type r 2 door) depending on your needs.

jap/uk really depends weather you will want to mod the car in the future, if your going to modify the car a uk car is pointless as the jap cars are higher spec but need mapping and mapping is apointless waste of money without mods.

and 18mpg is good as you wont get better than 20 in a turbo scooby and if you do, whats the point in havin it.

well 400hp was fun, but i am looking for something sensible now. No point working 24/7 just to pay car bills. so standart wrx should do well. i really dont want to mod anymore and i want it to be as standart as possible, so UK one would way better option.

the reason i ask mpg, is because i wont be flat out 24/7 too. i am looking at it as a car that has power when needed and when there is an urge for fun, not to go drag racing on each lights with corrolas. so 20mpg on normal driving and that goes even lower if you being a dick on a road?

Classic Irish wrx driven sensible with no mods no fueling issues will tip 30 mpg and still tip 150 mph
But your not gonna have fun like a skyline it more about grip and speed than tail sliding action

This is what I'd be looking at if in your shoes: https://isdc.ie/forum/threads/31476/ Gorgeous looking and everything you need

I'd usually recommend a jap sti all day long over anything else but you'll have to find one already mapped, then pay loading on the insurance and its a lot of hassle which it seems like you'd rather avoid..

WRX be the best of both worlds for what you're after.

from my experience the best alrounder in the subaru range is a uk spec wrx either classic or new age but preferably new age as they are nicer to drive i had a classic and it was a great car but my new age is just a more refined car if thats what you need, but still want a car that will do 150mph if needed thats the car you need.also buy the lowest mileage you can afford and the best history if a boxer has not been seviced regularly you will be in trouble if it has there is no reason it wont do 200k miles mine my last one had 208k on it and no probs my current car has 168k on it and no issues but i service every 3000k with good oil but 6000 would be fine too.my car is mapped and full exhaust and will do bout 250-300 miles to a tank (50 litres) normal driving extreme driving it will empty the tank in less than 100 miles

Not a fan of this one. Wheels don't look great on that one. Plus perfectly I want blue + gold wheels, or black and gold wheels. :)

I know it's not going to be as fun as rwd skyline, but I can't get back to 2.5 tax and poor mpg. There was a lovely r32 for sale in dtdirl, but it was gone in less then few hours :(. Plus I need now something normal, which would feel like a normal car, which can go fast now amd them. I was looking in to evo 7 too, but I was told mpg on those things are just brutal 24/7.

I have a wrx there that I think would suit you for price, looks and power.

Its a UK car so no need for mapping, the engine has been rebuilt with the only parts outside of original subaru parts been the ACL main and big end race bearings. This means should you want to mod for more power in the future the bearings are better then standard for the job.

Have a look and see what you think.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I sow it for sale. I am really surprised it is taking so long for you to sell it. Even price is right. Though If I am looking into wrx , them ill try to get blue one first.

Anyway, so far: to get Irish/uk model, normal driving can be around 25-30mpg, look for one with good history amd lower millage. Service intervals around 6k miles.

So uk ones are 220hp? Are there uk Sti?

Colour maybe as you say. :dontknow: The two that looked at it so far loved it though but most want the WR blue as you say. Really needs to be seen in person this one.

A lad looked at it last week said he loved it went away to sell his own car and phoned a few days later saying price was an issue. :ponder2:

Another lad from the site and his girlfriend looked at it the weekend and again loved it but has to sell her own car also so it'll be there for a while longer but there is interest so shouldn't last much longer.

Yeah a wrx is 220 standard but with a few small mods can see 320bhp with a remap to support mods.

There are Irish STi's and TypeUK STi's both the same car really but some came with a PPP from new.
They are 265bhp standard with the PPP bringing them to 300bhp in earlier models and 320bhp in the later models.

this might be of interest to you. It was imported into Ireland by JohnM on this site, he sold it to a friend of his and I ought it from him. Beautiful rear car. Only 1000 made in total. She is mint. I sold her to the lad that is selling it now. He went from a 6 series BMW to this so I'd say that's why he's selling it now.

i already read somewhere here, that it was owned by one of the members and that is being sold now for more then it was bought in the first place...

anyway, one more question: how is the driving qualities on standart wrx? is it very bumpy? lots of road noise?

Not bumpy but firm and with standard cat not noise as the sound proofing is good. Your welcome to a spin in mine as its as it should be so you'll know what to expect from others. Yeah that lad bought it from me and had it priced higher then he paid for it but he's reduced it now. I'd say if you pushed him on price he'd drop.

thanks for offer, but i am based in cork. its a long trip to just have a look ;). just found out that other option ( astra OPC ) is as bad or worse for mpg. so WRX look beter and better :)

Astra opc is mad on fuel alright. A mate of mine has one. Mad torque steer to.

opc astras are lethal for torque steer as you said eric,i wouldn't like a car that has so much power pushing the front wheels

sorry for long radio silence.

is it subaru blue, is it faded out? ( no offence )? or thats just picture quality? give me a shout if you have it up, i will listen to price, spec and wont mind to see more pics.

p.s. those quad lights look rotten on bug eye subarus :(.

had a look at my first subaru today. wasted money on petrol. agreed on price and shaked on it. he refused to take small deposit, he said its grand. on the way home got a phone call: "your mechanic to fussy! agreed price+300eu, take it or leave it!". needles to say i told him bye bye.

anyway lads. i decided on WRX or STI UK/irish one. 02 - 05 and has to be as standart as possible.

do i better off making new WANTED thread or maybe mod can change thread name, which would suit better?
