Graham – thank you for your enquiry re Octane rating of E5.

E5 has an Octane rating of 99.2. See attached Octane Test Certificate from SGS. I’m not sure however, whether or not its appropriate to use an Octane booster with this – probably best to consult your car dealer.

Comment: what octane is e5? can i use octane booster with this fuel? im using booster to 95ron petrol to bring it to 98ron to stop knocking in my high performance car.... ive heard this fuel is 99.2????

please reply

As far as I know it's just the cleaning agent in V-power that counter acts the octane booster!!
So as E5 is cleaner because it has 5% bioethinol, I wouldn't say the octane booster would be affected in the same way! :dunno:
Surely who ever is booked in for the first mapping could have €10 worth of E5 in the tank and the mapper can check the apropriate "knock or detination" thingies :dunno: save that mapp!! then go fill up with E5 plus lucas and see if it makes a difference!!
If no difference, just load up the saved map and then drive her handy for that tank full!
Sounds simple!!!!
Is it??
Dan

I was chatting to the owner of a Maxol in Navan. The Maxols are getting it between tomorrow and the 16th Sept. No drama. Just filling the tanks on top of the normal unleaded. If this is the case the first couple of batches will not be 99.2RON. Not until the deliveries are being loaded into empty tanks.

Sorry meant to add that all the other BRands have a higher octane bio-fuel in the pipeline as well

Hi Lads talking to the owner of the maxol garage in carrigaline co cork and he is getting this E5 mid september and also confirmed the ron as 98 ish . He said the big maxol garages that sell a lot are getting it first and smaller ones later on .

Called to 3 Maxol garages in Limerick this evening and none have it yet but none of the ones I was at have the E85 either.
The one in clarecastle does have E85 and I'll be there tomorrow so will check for E5 there aswell

Mack

This sounds good, I may have missed it in the thread somewhere but is it available in the UK ?[/quote]

Well to quote from their website:

The Maxol Group is entirely Irish owned, in the secure possession of the McMullan family, who have three generations of experience in the oil business.

The founder of the company was one William McMullan, a chemist by profession, who started the business modestly delivering paraffin oil by horse and cart around the streets of Belfast.

The original company was McMullan Bothers Limited, and was registered in Dublin in 1920.

From these humble beginnings the company has grown to become one of the largest and most respected family-owned businesses in Ireland. The Maxol Group is the third largest oil company in Ireland and both the leading Irish and European independent oil company.

The present board of directors comprises Max, Noel and Malcolm McMullan, all grandchildren of William. The Group Chief Executive is Tom Noonan and the Group's Headquarters is located in the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin's city centre.

The main trading companies in the Maxol Group are Maxol Lubricants Ltd., Maxol Direct Ltd., Maxol Ltd. and Estuary Fuel Ltd. in the Republic of Ireland and Maxol Oil Ltd.and Maxol Direct (NI) Ltd. in Northern Ireland.

So presumably it'll be available in the North, but nowhere else in the UK.

may not apply to 99 b4's ...as MY02(late01>) have the desno ecu..probably no diffence at all but they do have different ecu's i know that much

Check it again lads. Below it has a tick for all subarus after 1990

In the subaru general info books it clearly states that a 10% mix of ethanol can be used

Umm no, what it reads is:

                                                                                     E5 Suitable     E10 Suitable

BRAND  MODEL                                                              Yes       No     Yes        No

Subaru  All Subaru (before 1990)                                                 x                    x

Subaru  Liberty B4 (2002 to 2003)

Subaru  Liberty GT (2004 - 2006)

Impreza WRX STI (1999 to 2005)

Subaru  All models post MY1990 except above                  √                    √

So its saying all post 1990 models are suitable, except the Liberty/Legacy B4 (2002 to 2003), Liberty/Legacy GT (2004 - 2006) and WRX STI (1999 to 2005). Unless our cars are significantly different?  :dunno:
