New fuel from Maxol (not E85)

@ wet patch! ( good name by the way )
as far as I know is normal petrol mixed with 15% ethinol and is 104ron, suitable for new flexi fuel cars like the focus, v50 and saabs! I'm sure theres more! but these cars are designed to run on this stuff and when they do they have up to 35 bhp more (2.3 turbo saab)
I think normal cars can be converted though! I'm looking into it and I'll let you know when I have any useful info!
I know it's very widely used in brazil for a few years now!

@ rourkey
How do you know it's safe for us to use?? Did you find from a reliable source or any thing??
Dan

That's what i was thinking my self! but I think I'd like a profesional opinion!
I'd love to use it as a means of getting a few more horseys out of her!
Hope it makes a bit of a differne now! I know if i got mine mapped to 95ron I would have got approx 305 bhp but I got her mapped for 95+lucas and she's running 327bhp! so 99.2ron + lucas would be approx 4ron more than what she's mapped for now so hopefully a good differance!!
Dan

PS. how's your motor after the track time??

Errr, we are still talking 'bout Subarus here?  ;)

But seriously, the possible problems seem to lie with some of the turbo cars, and by the looks of it yours should have two of 'em ... (so double trouble?  :dunno:)

perfect no probs at all! mines ecu 95 plus lucas and zero det! watertemp got very hot tho think thats cause the fmic is blocking rad?? but all in all car was great on track my coilovers were destroyed going on as the shocks are weeping!

oh yeah and in our 20 minutes of fun i totally destroyed red stuff pads metal on metal :subaru: had to use handbrake on way home to slow down gradually :dunno:

God stuff! The mintex pads lasted grand! not really any notisable wear!  And I was braking pretty damn hard :headbanger:!
Other than a little bit of tyre scrub (outside corner of the tyre rounded slightly) no probs at all!
Used just under half a tank of petrol though!
Dan

Dan

Here's some more specific, and very up-to-date, official Subaru information from the Subaru New Zealand website, especially about problems with the different spec of Jap imports I've highlighted the Summary in blue for quick reference):

Ethanol compatability

Most Subarus purchased new in New Zealand since 1990 are capable of running on the ethanol blended fuel now being introduced to the local market.

However any Japanese domestic specification models which have been imported here second hand (i.e., second hand Japanese imports) - should not be run on the ethanol blended fuel.

These cars are only suitable for 3 percent blended fuels. The fuel being sold in New Zealand has a 10 percent ethanol blend.

The 10 percent ethanol blended fuel could cause damage to the fuel line, fuel injector sealing, fuel pump or fuel regulator of these second hand Japanese imports. The fumes from the blended fuel after combustion can also have a harmful effect on the catalytic converter, the exhaust gas regulator and the muffler.

Those Subarus which can use the 10 percent ethanol blended fuel have a 17 digit VIN number beginning with either JF1 or JF2. The VIN number can be found at the bottom of the central door pillar on the passenger’s side of the car or in the engine bay.

The second hand Japanese imports which should not use the ethanol blended fuel have VIN numbers starting with 7A8

A small number of models sold new in New Zealand cannot use the 10 percent blended fuel. They are.-

Legacy RS, Legacy GT, Legacy GTB, Legacy RSK and Legacy Blitzen from 1990 onwards; the Impreza STI from 1997 onwards and the Forester STI. They do not have JF1 or JF2 VIN numbers.

Owners who are not sure if they can use the ethanol-blended fuel in their car should consult their nearest Subaru Authorized Dealer.

IN SUMMARY

DO NOT USE Ethanol Blended Fuel – E5 or E10 if your car is:

• A Subaru with VIN Number that starts with 7A8
or
• Second hand Japanese imported Subaru
or
• A New Zealand New Subaru that is any of these models:
- Legacy RS, Legacy GT, Legacy GTB, Legacy RSK and Legacy Blitzen
- Impreza STI
- Forester STI

Your car CAN USE Ethanol Blended Fuel – E5 or E10:

• Only New Zealand new Subarus models 1990 onwards with a VIN number beginning with JF1 or JF2 may use E5 or E10 blended fuels

Note: The VIN number is a 17-digit number that can be found at the bottom of the central door pillar on the passenger’s side of the car or in the engine bay.

It seems the Kiwis are only a little ahead of us (and behind the Aussies) in the introduction of ethanol blended fuels, and it's all very new for them too - hence this recent statement from Subaru NZ. Also, the issue of Jap imports is a big one in New Zealand as just over half of all cars on their roads are secondhand imports, and 95% of those are from Japan, which is not the case in Australia.

And it looks like those VIN numbers apply here in Ireland too, as mine begins with JF1... (phew! )

Whilst a B4 imported from Japan is therefore doubly (or should that be trebly?) compromised/unsuitable?  :ponder:

Isnt E85 bio deisel ?

Biodiesel has a B number, like B5, B10 etc.

as far as I know [E85] is normal petrol mixed with 15% ethinol
That'd be E15, E85 is 85% ethanol with 15% petrol, the number being the percentage of Ethanol.

And from caradvice.com.au, 12th March 2007:

The FCAI also confirmed ... the vast majority of imported new cars sold in Australia are also compatible with E10 or E5. The essential thing to note however is that if your car is a performance car, specially turbo or supercharged, then ethanol fuel may not be for you.

Also i dont understand how all the Evo's and Skyline's and other Turbo cars can use the stuff and the Subaru cant??????????
